Book Is OK & Helpful. Not The Know All End All March 9, 2009 Sharpbevel (N. Hemisphere) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I used this book to study for the PANRE and found it helpful. I took the test on 3/6 and got my exam results on 3/10. I scored fairly well, around the 65th percentile. I used no other study guide.
Overall the book helps, it gives you feedback and clinical info instead of just telling you if you got the question right or not so I did learn a lot. The CD is a useful tool to practice taking the tests. You get your monies worth with this package.
Were there a lot of things on the boards that were in this book? Not really. There were a few times during the test that I recognized that if it were not for the book I may have gotten the question wrong. Taking the practice test did help me for the real exam. This was the 3rd time I took the boards ('96, '03 & '09) and felt these boards were a bit more challenging than the last time I took them.
Let's face it. No study guide replaces working in the field and doing your job. This book will help you prepare for the boards and taking review courses and going to conferences will help but not replace the day-to-day knowledge you get by just going to work every day and using the tools at your disposal to best serve your patients. I work a lot, am in a busy practice with a wide variety of patients and have about 15 years experience. To me, that is what really helped me pass. I do recommend this book as a study guide and though there are a few errors in the book I think Dr. Diamond has done a better job than other study guides I used in the past. If a new edition is available the next time I recert I will use it.
Good luck to all who are recertifying or taking the boards for the first time. If you're a new graduate what you learned in PA school will really help you. Study your old notes. Try not to sweat the boards too much. If you're a new grad or just working in the field you should do fine.
Good investment January 13, 2009 PAinNY 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book recently and was quite surprised, this book was completely different that all the other books I have. The questions in the first part have multiple answers on purpose! It's nice because it really makes you do the association thing in your head and actually think about the entire topic, which was nice. The explainations part gives you meat and potatoe facts that are definately need to know and also gives a nice review. Second part is best answer, no explaination but refers you back to a similar question in the first part. Level of questions are definately challenging. CD is nice because its taylored to what you want to study, book is randomized just like the boards definately a grab bag. Overall very nice book, but dont buy if your just looking to memorize questions.
Well written, but too much work for a review November 2, 2008 I. Black (Maryland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I did like the last chapter on PANCE basics, however the questions in the book were a nightmare. I am sorry, but the questions have more than one answer and it was just too time consuming and painful to study from. Good idea though. Not recommended for PANCE review, in my opinion.
It's OK, not the BEST book for PANCE review November 1, 2008 Lana Fontaine (Brooklyn, NY, USA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book costs the same as Kaplan PANCE review book, which has 2 PANCE-like exams, each broken down into 6 blocks (simulating the actual exam) with 60 questions each. If your the type that likes to go over questions when it comes to studying, Davis book defiantly lacks enough questions. If you re-certifying, this book is defiantly premature. For the same amount of money, I suggest Kaplan. Just like Davis, Kaplan offers extensive info on the PANCE exam, scoring, and re-certifying exam. I bought both books, as well as AAPA book and found it much more useful. Both, Davis and Kaplan offer money back guarantee in you don't pass the test. I did well on my initial PANCE exam and if it wasn't for going over the Kaplan questions and AAPA book online/CD-ROM question bank, I probably wouldn't have done as well. So I won't recommend this book as a primary.
Nice way to review a field after retrement September 19, 2008 Bookiness 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this for my mom who retired as a nurse years
ago, but is still very interested in the field. She
is using this book to get a concise view of the training
received by PA's that she's encountering more and more
frequently.
She greatly appreciates the survey and question format.
