All you need, if you have practiced more than 5 years January 11, 2009 Not Mark Twain (Colorado Springs, CO United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having graduated in 1973, there some areas of knowledge that have slipped away. Like pediatrics; I don't remember if I even took a rotation in peds. I have even gone back to look at my transcript and checked. I really don't even like children! In any case, I have no existing memory of those clinical experiences, in fact the 70's have many gaps. Come to think of it, the 70's may be the cause of those gaps? So much for experience learning - thanks a lot Dr Leary!
In any case, this book creates the quick kind of pseudo-knowledge, short-term mind-rush needed to take these idiotic re-certs. The CD test is very handy as you can leave it in your disc drive and take it in little bites. This avoids the need to take more Provigil.
I did very little prep for the 2008 re-cert other than this book & CD. Ten hours of this was enough to pass in the middle of the pack and that's all that counts. Like the tin man in The Wizard of OZ, if I only had a brain - I probably wouldn't need anything like this. When you spend time in specialty practices, it's easy to lose some basic knowledge and things do change (like every other day!) Use this book (even better; buy my used one - it's BARELY USED), and stop worrying,
A good place to start January 9, 2009 PAinNY 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book about 8 months ago to start studying for the boards. I very much recommend this book as a starting point for studying. This was the first book I bought. The chapters are approximately 20-30 pages long and covers major topics in detail, but definately leaves out some other common topics. Don't buy this book if you are looking for alot of explaination some of it is rather vague. It is great for clinical signs and symptoms but definately lacks in alot of the lab findings and treatments sections. Questions at the beginning of the book and CD are not extremely difficult but again a good place to start. CD allows you to taylor your studying. Overall highly recommended
Review: The NCCPA's recommended review guide. December 12, 2008 Rick Benefield (Atlanta, GA) Overall, this review text has been worth the purchase. It provides a quick review on a majority of topics. However, in my opinion, it lacks in one catergory: 1) when discussing treatment for a particular diagnosis this book does not give specific examples, so I am having to spend precious time reviewing other study materials for specific meds. This book is supposed to be a COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW!!!
Must have for PANCE November 2, 2008 I. Black (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used this book along with Van Rhee. Very too the point. I would have preferred that it came with some pictures or an atlas like Van Rhee. But for the money it is a must have. The CD was just OK.
A comprehensive review.... September 30, 2008 Robert A. Peterson This is a great book. It has helped me on my end of rotation exams for my clinical rotations. I only wish the questions were separated into sections.
