5 out of 5 stars Excellent   July 12, 2009

Bryson is like a teacher who despite having no deep knowledge of the subjects he is teaching succeeds admiringly because he knows just enough and imparts his knowledge with such eloquence and wit that learning becomes fun. Since finishing this book some four months ago, I have retained at least a third of the information laid out in its 500+ pages. This may not sound much but given the massive number of facts presented (and my deficient attention span), that's a credit to Mr. Bryson.

This is an entertaining and educational book well worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars The short history is really too short   July 8, 2009

I'd heard quite a bit about this book so decided to finally read it. I'm not a professional scientist, but have read widely on evolution and astronomy. However, even I found this book a bit too short. It's really geared toward people with little understanding of the science of astronomy or life. Having said that, it might be a good read for people with no prior interest or knowledge of these fields of science. Hopefully it will encourage more people to pursue careers in these fields. But it may not entertain readers with more background in these fields.

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down   July 7, 2009

Very good introductory book of the world and the universe around us for curious minds, easy to understand with a sense of humor. I really liked his writing style. I have read it so many times that I can't even count. My wife asked me quite a few times that why I kept reading the same book over and over, that's what I do. If I really like a book, I will keep reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Bryson Book Worth Reading   July 2, 2009

Having read a few of Bryson's books, he has become on of my favorites to read. He is pretty special in my book, with a perfect blend of research, life experience and a great sense of humor.

Of course when I saw the title "A Short History of Nearly Everything" I thought I knew what to expect in line with his other books, and looked forward to it because I thought it would cover a little bit of some subjects that I knew (or knew nothing about), and it worked out to be that and more.

There is alot of information contained in this book, more than I expected, and he is able to clearly get across his ideas about a wide range of subjects. Obviously there is a bit of humor in the book, as the title suggests, and I would suspect that based on the amount of information contained in the book (and that Bryson is not an expert in the fields) that it is not what would be called a definative statement on any of the subjects, but there is more than enough to "get your feet wet" and you can always pursue more formal material in those matters.

Very worthwhile and fun.
