Finished it! September 24, 2009 Kristine J. And loved every bit of it.
This is Bill Bryson at the top of his form, journalistic in style but always down to earth and comprehensible, Bryson takes us on a tour of the grand concepts, seemingly unafraid of the task he set for himself. And what a story, from the Big Bang to the end of the universe (possibly) he name-checks the people who made the discoveries and sets them in their context. He reviews the grand theories and tells some of the small personal stories behind them. At well over 400 pages it's not a book to rush through, but take the time and you'll be repaid with a notion of the wonder of it all.
A Short History of Nearly Everything September 24, 2009 anti-amazon (ca) I buy this in bulk and give for presents. It is easy reading and truly fun and educational. Good for young adults too. It is also a tremendous resource for people who have disorders because it shows that almost all the great discoveries were by troubled people or by accident.

This book took longer to arrive than other purchases, but it met my expetations. It was a good experience.
Absolutely Enthralling September 7, 2009 J. C. Clark (Arlington, VA) Do not be intimidated by the perceived "nature" of this amazing book. I was never particularly interested in science during my school years and hesitantly began reading this only after seeing a glowing review. I cannot overstate the pure joy I received from that decision. Truly one of the best books I have ever read, period. I didn't want it to end, which you don't hear often regarding a nearly 500 page book. In fact, when I finished it I went right to page one and started over, this time with a highlighter in hand. Yes, it can be overly detailed at times but what details they are! You'll find yourself rereading sentences and paragraphs as you go along, mouth agape. You'll find yourself jotting down names of people, places, and things to look up separately on your own. If you have any curiosity about existence, the world around you, the world within you, I cannot urge you more strongly, purchase this book! Read this book! Share this book with people you know. They will thank you and you'll feel good sharing the joy of... everything.
