Very Enlightening October 17, 2009 Sargon (Albuquerque, NM) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Really enjoyed reading this book. Gets bogged down just a slightly with the DNA bit, but that is just a minor speed bump in an otherwise well written work--and written so most of us can understand it. I really enjoyed the part about us being the product of in-breeding. haha
I recommend it!!
Layperson's View of Universe October 7, 2009 G. McGonigle (Austin, TX USA) This is an eye-opener for the layperson not shooled in cosmology, astronomy and particle physics. By using helpful analogies, the author unlocks much recent research in these areas for lay appreciation. However, in the latter part of the book, he bogs down in detail. All in all, though, it's a worthwhile read.
Snuggle up to Uncle Bill while he takes you on a fascinating journey September 30, 2009 Carla Sammut (Melbourne, Australia) Absolutely fascinating, hard to understand information digested and delivered in the most dry, sardonic and hilarious way. Its like have a cup of tea and a big chat about inherrantly interesting stuff with your twinkle in the eye, nerdy great uncle. I had never read Bill Bryson before and now I worship the man. I'm keen to read it again.
A BOOK ABOUT SCIENCE WRITTEN FOR THE NON-SCIENTIST September 29, 2009 Barbara Rice Never, ever would it occur to me to walk into a bookstore and say, "Gee, I think I'll buy a book about physics, protons, and the origin of the universe." But because Bill Bryson wrote this, I bought it as soon as it was released. Not only does he explain incredibly complex and obscure subjects so that an ordinary non-scientist reader can grasp them, he does so with humor. Moreover, he interjects the human element into these subjects - the jealousy and rivalry between scientists and how those petty battles affected research and eventual outcomes.
I can't say I totally understood everything - some of it was just too abstract. But one thing I do recall that made an impression: you know that fuzzy screen on your TV when you come to a "dead air" channel, with the ensuing noise? Some of that is coming from the furthest reaches of the universe. I loved that.
A fun Read September 24, 2009 E I really enjoyed this book. I found myself sharing funny stories about scientists with my friends.
FYI-the pages at the top of the book in the back were stuck together. I had to tear them apart to turn the pages. It kindof slows things down a little.
