The book is never wrong January 2, 2009 Ian Zepp (Denver, CO USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been working my way through this book over the past few weeks, largely focusing on the quantitative portions. To date, I've completed about 80% of all of the available quant questions, and I can say with complete certainty that the book is never wrong.
I've been wrong a few times, but it has always, without exception, been due to an oversight or error on my part and not a mistake in the text. I can't say that about very many preparation books that I've used in the past, and I've taken probably 20+ certification, licensing, and other examination tests in the last 10 years.
If you have the time and are willing to make an effort to work your way through the problem sets with this book, you will be rewarded. I scored a 590/740 on my first GRE attempt with only a partial scan through this book, and I'm shooting for a 700/800 on my second attempt in the next few weeks. With the quality of review this book provides, I'm definitely optimistic.
UPDATE 1/13/2009: I just completed taking the GRE exam for a second time and scored a 670 verbal / 800 quantitative, thanks in no small part to working through the practice exercises in this guide.
Advice December 31, 2008 FAISAL F. ALBAQAMI (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Hi,
I am from Saudi Arabia.
I am advising you to prepare for GRE math test by start with "Kaplan GRE exam math workbook" after you finish from this book you will gain the basic knowledge of mathematics and make you more faster to solve math problems, then it best to you to start with math section in "Barron's GRE preparation" because the Barron book has advanced math and difficult questions which help you to become familiar with difficult questions in real GRE test.
For verbal preparation, I think the Barron is enough.
This is the best method for GRE test preparation.
Good Luck
Barron's is the secret to success in GRE December 16, 2008 Godthi Vamsy (Kakinada, India) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It is a good investment to have a Barron's for GRE preparation. The book is well organized and the content is updated with each edition to match the current GRE. The Math is good but it is the verbal part that makes it worth having.
GRE: Math is No Longer An Enigma December 11, 2008 Bumble (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Studying for the GRE math section initially seemed like a daunting task-especially since I majored in the Liberal Arts and have a very limited background in pre-calculus [I scrapped by with a C+].
Thus far, I have been very satisfied with the math solution explanations since they are explained alongside with visual explanations [i.e. shadowed areas and lines] and a reason for why a particular `Tactic' was applied.
I am disappointed that the "Reviewing Vocabulary" section does not have a spelled pronunciation key; therefore, what happens is that I learn the meaning of new word but then do not know how to pronounce it. As a result, I have purchased an unabridged dictionary.
All in all though, I am satisfied-this is an easy read. Three months until test time!
Barron's GRE Test Prep December 7, 2008 Gregory G. Ferrick (Boston, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Barron's GRE Review book is loaded with helpful content, however I find that the way it is organized can be rather perturbing. For someone who has studied for hours on end for the GRE, and taken them, I would go with a book more along the lines of Kaplan's offerings. Don't get me wrong, Barron's has almost analogous content, however the "Key Facts" organization makes it flustering to flip through pages to find out why you're doing a process, and how to execute it. Good Content, Poor Organization.
