2 out of 5 stars Practice tests are helpful, get other books for material review   July 27, 2009

Get this book only if you want practice tests--it's great for that, but the material review is definitely inferior to the Kaplan books. In the math review, there are several places where the authors make conceptual leaps ("clearly you can see that...") that are not at all clear and do not at all follow from what the author has presented. Also, explanations are often unnecessarily convoluted. Not at all helpful! Plus, there are several places where the book offers practice questions, but then provides only the answers, not an explanation of how the answers were derived. By contrast, Kaplan's Verbal Review and Math Review books are excellent--concepts clearly build chapter to chapter, everything is described clearly and simply, and there are detailed explanations for all practice questions. Sometimes it's helpful even to read the explanations for answers you got right, to find a more efficient way to answer the question. My strong recommendation--if you want practice exams only, consider this Barron's book. For actual material review, definitely do not rely on this book--go the Kaplan route instead.

My GRE preparation was mainly based on Barron's and to my biggest disappointment Barron's hasn't kept updating their Math's content with that of ETS. You often come across problems such as angle of a time in a clock, this kind of problems never appear on the real GRE, secondly the probability content is very very outdated, problems on data interpretation sucks, loosing few important questions on the Quant section can very well land you with a bad score. I strongly suggest that you look at other books for Math's preparation.

3 out of 5 stars Barrons = Okay   July 16, 2009

I found this book sort of useful, but if I was going to buy only one, i'd get the Princeton Review. Barron's math exploration is definitely more in depth than the Princeton review, but their method of explaining the advancement of steps, and explaining of how you move forward is very difficult to follow. Because of this I barely even used this book for its math. It actually really frustrated me and made the learning process more difficult. The book is useful because it gives A LOT of practice tests and practice areas. So I would often study other books and do the tests from the Barrons. Its worth getting if you do one of the amazon deals where you can combine purchases, but it wouldnt be the first book i'd buy. I thought Clif's Math Review for Standarized Tests was MUCH better for math review and explanations. I'd also get the Barrons "Essential Words For the GRE". Both of those books will require 6 - 8 week of studying regularly. I pulled both of my scores up a lot (100+ pts) with the help of devoting study time and their resources. Final scores 630 V, 660 M. Good enough! Good Luck.

It's organized well and has the information needed to prepare well. However, some of the explanations, particularly math, assume that one already has at least a basic knowledge of formula's etc. So, if you don't, and don't have anyone to help you along with them, this is a bit difficult.

The book was in good condition, like the description said. Fast delivery and decent pricing.
