I did not get the book at all, and I really need it, i did not know how to track the book online to know the status. This is the first time this has happened to me after a purchase from amazon, I want to be sure what happened. Thank you
Good test review book with some limitations September 3, 2009 C. Fox (Jacksonville, FL) The Barron's GRE book does a good job familiarizing test takers with the format of the test as well as providing good test review on both the quantitative and verbal portions. A few thoughts on the particulars:
-The computer based test CD that came with the book reproduced the feel of the test fairly faithfully, although the test question bank was limited, so if you take it several times within a few days, you're likely to see the same questions repeated and get an artificially higher score.
-The quantitative review is very good, especially for people like me who have been out of the academic environment for a few years and who don't use coordinate geometry in their daily life. I also used the sparknotes website to study math review, which was perhaps an even better resource.
-Even though I didn't use the verbal review section to study word lists, roots or prefixes, the strategies presented - like mulling over the word pairs to establish relationships before looking at the list, rather than just looking to see which pairs were 'like' the first one - were a great help and helped me in the test.
-The essay portion was good mainly for introducing the types of essays.
The book lacks the new types of questions which have recently been incorporated into the GRE, and while they are fairly benign, I had to go elsewhere to study for and research them. Also, I believe the book gives 30 minutes for the quantitative test, rather than the 45 that is currently allowed. In the actual test, this increase in time threw off my timing, as I worked the first half much more slowly than I had been used to until I realized that I was running out of time.
I bought this book and the ETS book as they were the most economical ones, studied them both hard for three weeks or so, taking seven or eight practice tests between them, took the test and scored 730 on both quantitative and verbal. On the first few practice tests I scored in the 500's on the quantitative side and in the mid 600's on the verbal. Verbally, the only thing that changed was my familiarity with the question types and verbal reasoning strategies; I didn't learn any new words. Quantitatively, I both reviewed a lot of dormant geometry, algebra and word problem skills and learned some excellent test taking strategies that frequently negated the need to actually solve the problem.
On the whole, it's a good buy at a mere fraction of the 150 dollar test fee.
If you are only going to buy one GRE prep book, buy this one August 25, 2009 S. Toppy (Robbinsville, NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a college graduate.... who graduated from college more than 15 years ago, so I was a bit daunted when I decided to go to grad school and realized I had to take the GREs. I almost considered not going back to school because the test scared me so much. I haven't done any math past basic arithmetic since college--I haven't needed to. But, I decided to give myself six weeks to prepare for the test and see what happened. After reading several reviews on Amazon, I decided on this book (the one that comes with the CD-ROM), and devised a study plan that would take me through the entire book over a six-week period. The six-week plan I created for myself is not for the faint of heart. This is a book that covers A LOT of information, and if you are going to do the whole thing, I would recommend doing it in 8 to 10 weeks, but I didn't have that kind of time. So I crammed, between work and taking care of kids, I ate, breathed, and slept this book. I started out by taking the diagnostic tests to see where my weaknesses were. I got only 7 math questions correct out of 28 and 15 correct out of 30 verbal questions. I had a lot of work ahead of me.
I began with the math review in the middle of the book, since that was my greatest weakness, and did about 10 pages a day, relearning all the math I had forgotten since high school. I created flashcards for myself with all of the formulas provided so I could keep them fresh in my mind when I moved on to a different math topic. The practice questions at the end of each review are excellent, and the book really teaches you how to think about these problems in a different way. After the math review, I reviewed the test taking tactics provided, which really help when you just don't know how to answer a question. I took every practice test offered in the book, including the one on the CD-ROM, and by the end of my six-week study session, I was getting 18-20 problems correct in the math section.
While I was reviewing math, I also reviewed 2 glossaries a day in the vocabulary review. There are over 3,000 words in the 50-section glossary, so it was important to get started on that right away. I found the verbal section to be a very good review, and I improved my score immensely by the end of my study session.
The essay section of the book provided very good information on what to expect on the test, but I would like to have seen a couple good sample essays in the answer key. Otherwise I would have given this book a 5--really my rating is a 4.5. I'm a pretty strong writer, so for me it didn't matter, but for folks who need help with essay writing, I recommend picking up a book that focuses on writing good essays. ETS's Power Prep does provide good sample essays, though, and I encourage everyone taking the test to download that software AFTER you review this book, and work through the sample tests that ETS provides.
All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase. After taking the test one time, I scored at 650 on the verbal and a 700 on the math, and scored a 5 (out of 6) on the essays. Can't ask for much better than that!
Good tests August 18, 2009 Adam Karnik (Omaha, NE) This was the only book I used for GRE prep, and I thought it was generally useful. The practice tests are representative of the actual GRE, and the information about the GRE was very helpful. I didn't need the math review, so I can't comment on that. The verbal review is basically a glossary of hundreds of high-occurrence words.
In short, buy the book for the practice tests, but unless you like rote memorization, stick to another review form. Don't forget the free GRE PowerPrep software on the ETS website!
Barron's GRE prep 2009 August 8, 2009 AvidReader (New York) Barron's is truly one of the best in standardized test preparation. I used products for both the GRE and LSAT and highly recommend Barron's, along with as many practice tests as you can get your hands on.
