I Love This Book! June 20, 2005 Kristina Hefner (Arizona USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have been an RN for over 11 years and wanted to change the specialty I worked in. I had seen Donna Cardillo's column in Nursing Spectrum magazine and liked the advice that she would give to nurses with questions about career, etc... When I saw this book, I looked through it, and thought it would be helpful to me as I changed specialties. I love it! It was very motivating and kept me going as I oriented to the new area. I would recommend this to all new nurses as well as more seasoned nurses, who are looking for a change and need some extra motivation. The book is very easy to read and provides invaluable insights.
Very Generalized Information, Very Disappointing June 14, 2005 Kath Doula (Broken Arrow, OK, USA) 20 out of 25 found this review helpful
I picked up this book and I hoped that it would give me an idea of what my first year as a nurse would be like. I was greatly disappointed in that the advice in this book was so general, it could fit a number of jobs. It didn't have any solid advice for nursing, other than what would be common sense to anyone going to work for the first time. In fact, in some areas of the book, the advice could have been meant for anyone. If you took out the word "nurse" and added "teacher", it would have been appropriate advice for teachers, too.
I don't believe much of the advice applies to nurses; rather the workforce in general. For example, dating on the job. The rather general advice didn't necessarily pertain to nursing, it could have been applied to a business office, restaurant workers, teachers, firefighters, etc.
If you are looking for a book about what your first year will be like and advice on that subject, this is not the book for you. There's no meaty advice that a new grad wouldn't have a grasp upon. Also, it's written on a 9th grade level. Anyone who has been through nursing school might find that the book insults their intelligence.
The book can be summed up in one sentence: use common sense. If there's anything that a good nurse has, even a new one, is common sense.
This book is helping me a LOT! March 1, 2005 Mary Lebus (Tinton Falls NJ USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm an older nursing student and I was in the
Borders bookstore looking for a book to help me with
care plans. This book jumped out at me.
It was just what I needed. Specially the part about
writing down the good things I do and rereading them
when I get down in the dumps.
I highly recommend this to any and all nursing students as well as first year nurses.

It renewed my confidence. January 19, 2005 Laura J. Gomes 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I received this book as a Christmas gift after going through the toughest 3rd semester. I was ready to give up and doubting my ability to become a nurse. I read this book and realized that my feelings were normal and that my strong desire to be a good nurse is what I need to focus on. I will graduate in May and will look back on this book many times in the next year when I need to refocus and continue on. Thank you for your encouragement and real life examples to understand we all start somewhere and how to get through that initial time without giving up. Sincerely, future RN, Laura Gomes.
What A Lucky Find... January 18, 2005 Heather-Lynn Nelson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this book without really knowing what it was about (while purchasing the req'd texts, I might add). Little did I know that the information I would learn would be almost more important than what the textbooks would be teaching me.
I have read this book cover to cover a few times already. I've highlighted the important points, written things in etc.... This book is fantastic and I've been recommending it to all of my colleagues in my classes. Thanks to Ms. Cardillo, I've made business cards, purchased a student membership with the local nursing association, and I'm feeling more and more confident about myself as a competent "nurse." I will finish my program in July and I just can't wait!
