Interesting, visually enjoyable book for the Halo enthusiasts January 24, 2010 B. Walker (Wisconsin, United States) I gave this as a gift to my Halo-loving 17-yr. old son, so this review is based on what he said about the book and a few things I noticed about it.
This is one heavy, big book, about the size of a coffee table book. It's rich with very good illustrations and nuggets of information, some of which my son wasn't aware of. What some of the others have said is true; this isn't a book that contains a lot of Halo's back story or goes into a great deal of information about weapons, characters, maps, etc., that an experienced Halo player wouldn't already know.
Truthfully, this is better compared to a dictionary than an encyclopedia. Generally speaking, not much more than a page is dedicated to a lot of Halo's mechanics, and as has been already said, since the author of this is also the author of some Halo novels, there's a pretty focused point of view that sacrifices the fuller experience of the Halo Universe.
This is a nice book to page through and pick up a fact here and there; as I mentioned, the illustrations are well done and in the end, the thing that saves this book from just being something you look at once and toss on the shelf. Considering the upcoming release of Halo: Reach this fall and what will surely be the continuation of the series for a while, this book is going to be outdated quickly.
I still think this is a nice gift for the Halo fan that absolutely has to have everything (or nearly everything), but for the casual player that isn't interested in much beyond playing the game, they probably could skip this and not really miss anything.
Has a lot of info for Fans! January 23, 2010 Diego Rossello (Peru, Lima) I will never regret buying this, I was praying they had enough info so I could always go back and check staff if I ever forget something I found in the books. They have everything detailed, really nice pictures, and artwork, and at the end a Glossary, so you can find whatever you are looking for. I never imagined the book was so Big! Its big, great print, tons of pictures, artwork, info, everything you need to learn to know everything of halo until this point. Recommend a hundred times.
Halo Encyclopedia January 18, 2010 George Bokisa Sr. It was exactly what might be expected, a compendium of Halo facts and figures. Story lines are reviewed and characters attributes shown. It was bought for my boys and is a staple on our coffee table in the family room....
Halo Encyclopedia January 17, 2010 Shs Dooms (Breda, The netherlands) As an avid Halo fan, for me this book is a must have. Not that there's much shocking new stuff that I didn't know of, but the artwork is just exellent. And it's a nice overview of the Halo universe in one package. Also for those not so familiar with the Halo universe it is a convenient way of getting up to speed. The quality of the book is remarkable. Bonded, not glued and heavy quality paper. It is a encyclopedie in the most literal sense of the word.
A tour of Halo's entire structure and universe January 16, 2010 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) Any Halo gamer more than casually involved in the program will find this an exhaustive, comprehensive companion to the characters, history and locations of Halo, Halo2 and 3, Halo Wars and ODST. It uses never-before-seen material from the Halo story and is more than just a listing of Halo specifics: it's a tour of Halo's entire structure and universe, and promises lasting and vivid reading packed with full color for any Halo player.
