Good but requires more June 15, 2009 V. Faller (Coral Gables, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book does cover much of the material on the exam but I feel like it focuses on certain material that just wasn't covered. I don't think I would have passed using this book and the provided practice test alone. My suggestion is use this book in addition to other forms of training.
Few typos, but has given me a solid grounding... June 14, 2009 Book worm (Australia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've read this book cover to cover, and found few typos. I cannot estimate the level of depth that this book is supposed to be because I'm not a .NET expert, but by reading it I learned a lot of things [...]
The samples on domains and security are quite advanced for me since I haven't used them and haven't had any projects created using those concepts. I love the topic on Cryptography, as well as Collections and Generics.
Even If I don't pass the exam, the knowledge I gained from this book alone is well worth the price and effort reading it.
...fortunately, I did!
p.s. the book coupled with tweaking MSDN examples will help you pass.
Excellent Study Guide For The 70-536 Exam April 22, 2009 T. Cummings 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I recently used this book as my primary study tool for the 70-536 exam. It covers each section on the exam in sufficient detail in order to pass. I highly recommend taking the practice tests from not only the included cd, but from measureup website as well (they provide the sample questions on the cd). Yes, there are some typo's in the text, but they don't take away from the learning experience. The author spends time to explain not only how to do something, but why it is done. For an individual for myself, I found this style of writing to be very easy and informative to follow.
Every individual will have different study techniques that they employ to pass the exam. For some, that includes using MSDN to supplement the text (which I don't think is necessary). However, an individual like myself will spend the time to read the book twice (which may or may not work for you).
Overall, this book will provide you with the proper foundation to take the exam and likely pass on your first try.
Covered the material in the exam and provided neat coding tips March 25, 2009 Jason Turan 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I personally found this book useful. I've been playing with C# for a while and decided to go pro by studying and passing this exam. The book was well organized and broken up into chapter which each contained about three lessons. This makes it easy to schedule "I'm going to complete two lessons each week".
He provided little tips of the trade for most chapters. Just little things like you don't want to use += operators for strings since strings are immutable and therefore wastes memory and security best practices.
This being the first test in the MCTS series it has a very broad base that isn't supposed to teach you any one skill in depth. It gets you familiar with many different aspects of the .NET platform that you might otherwise run into on a daily basis. The book seemed to cover the material since I wasn't surprised by anything during the final exam
Almost what you really need to know February 25, 2009 vbguy (Springfield, VA United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The most important thing about a book like this is whether it can actually help you pass the exam. In my case, it did. But like other reviewers, my reaction was that the coverage of the various topic areas was very sparse. Having already gotten a MCSD, I feel I know what these exams are like. I would read through one of the chapters and say to myself "I know it's not going to be that easy".
If I had to do it all over again, I would have read each chapter, maybe worked with some of the sample code on the CD (which is also pretty mimimalistic) and then spent some time looking up pertinent .NET types on MSDN, and reading other books and articles to fill in the gaps. That's what I ended up doing during the "cram" stage just before the exam, anyway. I think it would have been a better use of my time if I had done that in stages instead of trying to cram it all at once.
Where code samples weren't especially helpful, the practice test that was on the CD did seem to help quite a bit. It's not that the questions are that much like the real exam questions but they helped me focus on lots of details that the book didn't bring out. Don't bother with using that thing to "score" yourself, as if you passing that CD test means you can pass the real exam. Use it grill yourself on some of the excruciating detail that getting through one of these things is all about.
Where the book was unrealistically general, the practice test was hopelessly detailed. It was a real relief that the real test was nowhere near fixated on the minutia of specific method calls and overloads, etc. as that practice test. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here to write this review, having aleady shot myself.
So all in all, the overall package is worthwhile if you want or need to pass the 70-536 test, at least until something better comes along.
