makes AP bio a whole lot easier March 25, 1999 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
As part of the AP Bio program, I feel that a lot of information must be crammed into a student's head. Purves et al meticulously explain each process, allowing for easier memorization and, more importantly, understanding of the complex processes. Some chapters, however, are still extraordinarily difficult to master. For example, chapters 14 and 15 were practically impossible (snrps anyone?) Other than that, this book is flawless. The pictures and the explanations that accompany them are very useful. I would recommend this book to those that are considering an AP biology course or even a college course (Did you know Harvard uses this book? That made us high school students feel smart!) Enjoy everybody!
Somewhat lessens the hell that is AP Biology March 8, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As an 11th grade victim of AP Biology, I have found some solace in this textbook. It is well-written and illustrated, and it is usually clear and informative. Aside from the occasional chapters that threw me for a loop (For example: Chapter 14 - The Eukaryotic Genome and its Expression. Huh?) the book is very good and I would recommend it to future AP Bio students.
A Wonderful, Expansive Overview of Biological Science March 1, 1999 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Towering over the ever-growing underbrush of mediocre textbooks, "Life" is an excellent book that thoroughly uncovers the richness and complexity of biological science. Consistently approached from a scientific viewpoint, the topics are presented in great detail without sacrificing clarity that is required for introductory texts. The illustrations are numerous and beautiful; they are instructive in and of themselves. I began to use this book as a supplement for a mediocre text in an intro biology course, but very soon I used it exclusively. If you want a great biology text, BUY THIS BOOK.
I enjoyed using this text October 2, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Life: The Science of Biology was a great text that I read during a cell biology course. Unlike lots of other science textbooks, this one did not read like a checklist of various theories and models. Purves et al developed their ideas throughout the text and presented them in clear terms which made learning easier. Difficult cycles and mechanisms were meticulously explained without becoming dull or esoteric. The helpful figures, which were well integrated into each topic, brought the minute details of the smallest organelles to life. Life: The Science of Biology was a wonderful companion which I still refer to time and again as the final word on issues of biology.
Purves is a genius. October 2, 1998 I have found "Life, the science of Biology" an incredibly helpful aid to my studies of the life sciences. Purves brillantly eludicates the very fundementals of this science to the utmost pinnacle of schlorship.
