5 out of 5 stars Awesome teaching tool   September 5, 2009
Dawn in KC (Kansas City, KS)
I used this book with both my girls. Now the older one is in 3rd grade and has just scored the highest in her class on the standard reading test.
The other is just starting first grade and reads pretty well. They are both good spellers also because of the basics this book teaches. It is a very good book for parents to use
to start their kids on the road to reading. Don't depend on the school to teach your child to read because it may not happen and then your child will be very far behind in school and eventually in life. I highly recommend this book!!

It is an interesting concept and it probably works. However, the book would benefit greatly from color illustrations and more engaging stories. My child is showing good results, however, he is extremely bored with this book (we are on lesson 65).

5 out of 5 stars Great Book--Amazing Results!   August 27, 2009

I started this book with my 5.5 yr-old on July 10th, and by mid-Aug (a little over a month later), we're 3/4 way into the book and my little girl can read at (I think) 1st grade level. We started with one lesson a day for about 12 days and then I decided to speed things up and we did 2 a day on average, for a month. Since it was summer and we were traveling and vacationing a lot, we sometimes missed our lessons and would have make-up days on which we would do 3-4 lessons a day. She was doing great with 2 lessons a day until at around lesson 70 or so, when each lesson gets more complicated and the stories take much longer to read. So finally, I decided to ease off and only do 1 lesson a day, and that's a good pace for us. We definitely spend more than the advertised 20 minutes/day, as the lessons get a bit longer to do as you progress. We're about 90% done, and the major thing we're working on is transitioning from the special syntax to regular english (i.e., with no little hats over letters).

It's easier for a third party to notice the results. My husband is constantly amazed at what we have achieved over this month and a half. Our 5-yr-old went from not being able to read AT ALL, to reading at a 1st grade level at the least. I plan to use the same book with my 2 younger kids when they're ready. It was cute to see my 20-month-old to imitate her older sister "sounding out" words, whenever she sees the lesson book.

Partially as a result of the huge success of this summer teaching/learning, we have decided to home school our child for Kindergarten this year.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent literacy tool   August 22, 2009

I picked this book up in the Peace Corps office to use in the schools I work in. It's great for one-on-one or in very small groups of children, and I've had success with children up to 10 years old working in this book. The lessons are straight forward and easy to follow, but be sure to read the introduction thoroughly before starting any of the lessons with a child. Everything you need to help children learn to read or improve poor reading skills is in there. This is actually the second time I've ordered the book for coworkers!

One improvement I would make is to have children spell words in the stories at the end of later lessons, rather than just practice writing single letters. I've started doing this and it helps me to identify which students need more help with spelling; reading and spelling skills are not always at the same level!

5 out of 5 stars Worked well for us   August 16, 2009

I began using this book to teach my daughter to read during Kindergarten. She is homeschooled and this was our chosen "method" of learning for reading. She did very well at first, but then began to struggle. I thought it was the book, but it WAS NOT the book! She had vision issues and once those were corrected she was begging to do a 2nd reading lesson every day. Half way through 1st grade her reading level was tested and she came out with a 3rd grade reading level. I plan to use this book with my almost 4 year old. He doesn't yet recgonize most letters and I'm waiting on purpose because of the way this book teaches. This book teaches the letters as sounds (ie: 'm' is the sound mmmmm, not the Letter M or 's'is the sound ssssss, not the Letter S). I did a few lessons with him when he wasn't yet 3 and he still remembers the sounds we learned and is excited to learn to read. Overall, this is an excellent book and I highly recocmmend it to any who would like to teach their child to read. Especially to those who's child is in say, 2nd or 3rd grade and hasn't yet mastered reading. It's not painless, and it's not 2 minutes a day, but is well worth every moment.
