A little misleading February 14, 2009 scheinerinc. (New City, New York USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
While there is some very good rules of thumb to follow, for the most part is very basic. I thought that the examples shown were going to be a bit more stylized and less off a traditional format.
Pearls of Wisdom on Presentation Graphics/Beautiful February 3, 2009 Ira Laefsky (Philadelphia, PA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book does two things so well that there is no question that you will
obtain knowledge and value in your pursuit of learning the visual art of presentation graphics. First it presents pearls of wisdom on developing slides and visual presentations for business and scientific audiences. Secondly, it is a gorgeous coffee table book of illustrations from these presentations. But, it lacks (at least for me) a coherent organized approach to learning how to present with graphic illustrations and which tools and advice to employ at what stage of developing a presentation. It fails at one thing every good presentation must do, no matter how beautiful; to tell a logically laid out story (in this case one about how I can go from being graphically inept to being an excellent presenter with visual illustrations). But, I give it four stars since it provides several excellent pieces of advice (well worth the cost of the book) and excellent illustrations of key aspects of graphic design for presentation and wowing audiences.
Avoiding "death by bullet points" February 3, 2009 Benjamin Vaterlaus (Tucson, AZ USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nancy Duarte has an impressive resume that includes having created keynote slideshows for the likes of the Mozilla (Firefox browser) founder and Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth. She knows that presentations should be more about the presenter and less about the "slideument" that most of us are familiar with. She goes through PowerPoint as a graphic tool to help convey ideas, not words, sentences, or phrases. It is beautifully created and could as easily be a "coffee table" book as it is a tool in a professional presenter's library. Combined with Gar Reynolds' Presentation Zen (which goes over more of the concepts and philosophy of "clean" presentations), this will help you work to escape the death by PowerPoint we all encounter in every large meeting!
Addresses the visual nature of presentations February 3, 2009 Leam Hall (SW Georgia, USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Don't be fooled, you won't finish the book with a degree in visual arts. You won't really get a lot of the theory either, unless you already have a degree in visual arts. However, Nancy has given an overview of the best ways to use slides to visually communicate with passion.
To present well you must build on the triad; a great idea communicated through well chosen words and memorable graphics. Nancy provides the much needed introduction to the graphical portion in a way that lets most of us improve our presentations. If you don't think you can spend a few hours over the next weeks discussing fonts, logo ideas, and color schemes with your team you might want to revisit your priorities. Don't we already waste hours on slides that are forgettable in minutes?
Read the book, discuss it with your team. Generate ideas, implement the best ones. Change the world.
It's a good reference January 29, 2009 Tchen (California) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was my first PowerPoint book so when I first read it, I thought it was fantastic. It contains some great ideas for PowerPoints, but unless you have a team, lots of time, and bosses that are willing to experiment with you, it's really hard to apply her principles.
All and all, it's not a how-to book, but I think it's a cool book to flip through and get ideas from and it did change the way I viewed presentations.
