I received my book in a very reasonable amount of time considering where they were shipping from.
Interesting introduction to quantitative business analysis January 29, 2009 Scott D. Bonnell (New York, NY United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Supercrunchers provides an adequate introduction to statistic-based quantitative business analysis. While the timber and structure of the book is interesting, most managers will find it light in content. That said, a good starting point for people who have not integrated fact-based, quantitative analysis into their decision making processes.
Reads like a Bad Wired Article January 13, 2009 J. Sheehy (Florida, US) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an interesting and diverse subject. Ayres treatment is shallow and empty. It seems as if he produced the text in a couple months. Most of the examples he uses in the early part of the book about data mining are items that were widely publicized in the IT trade press.
I'm disappointed with this book. It reads like a typical puff Wired piece that is short on facts and full of hand waving about potential societal benefits from a 'revolutionary' technology.
It would have more appeal, if Ayres bothered to distinguish where the application of "super crunching" techniques are productive and where they are dangerous. Additionally, the author mentions how a bright high schooler can perform some of these techniques, but fails to include a chapter with any examples or discussion of tools and techniques. I guess this book is only for people dumber than a "bright high schooler".
I don't recommend this book, unless you want something very light to kill five hours while traveling.
Opinionated January 8, 2009 James M. McCready (Novi, MI) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although I have only just begun to read the book, I'm disappointed so far at how opinionated the author is in his examples and comments. I'm still reading, so we'll see if it gets better.
Superficial December 28, 2008 A reader 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think Ian Ayres knocked this book up in about 5 minutes hoping to cash in on the recent interest in data-driven startups. It is a real disappointment, superficial and patronising.
