Are all physicists nice guys? February 11, 2009 Rothery 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't bought this book, but I'm here because I just heard the story about Dr. Fleisch and Amazon customer Mr. Cuhaci on Canada's renowned "As It Happens" on CBC radio. What a story, what a guy (Dr. Fleisch)!
The story caught my attention because of the Maxwell equations reference, but then when I heard how the author went way, way out of his way (and at considerable expense) to personally deliver the book to the customer, well, this book is now in my Amazon shopping cart, waiting to be ordered on my next batch of books. I'm an electronics engineer so this book will be readily devoured when I get it, especially based on all the great reviews here.
Kudos to Dr. Fleisch for both a great book and a great spirit.
great book February 9, 2009 S. cox 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A very clear explanation of Maxwell's laws in both differential and integral form. Good examples make it easy to follow. The only problems I could see was that electric field expressions for some shapes weren't derived, just given and the answers to questions aren't in the book but on the website.
Great little book. January 11, 2009 C. Gomez (Austin, Tx) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was a great read. The online resources such as the Author's podcasts were an excellent study resource along with the worked solutions.
Highly recommended January 7, 2009 D. Bonn 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It seemed a high price for a small paper back, but I've found it to be very much worth the cost. Whether you're a student new to the subject or a professional looking for a quick review, this is an excellent text. Short, too the point and clearly written, it is exactly as advertised.
The only way to learn this subject is to solve problems with some good feedback. In spite of this, it is rare to find a book that offers a good number of solved problems. Part of what makes this book a good deal and an excellent source is the accompanying web site that posts solutions to the problems, complete with hints. It is easy to try the problems and check for hints or complete solutions. The problems are well chosen for completing your knowledge and the solutions are clearly written.
Buyer beware, Softcover book missing first 38 pages (updated)!!! December 24, 2008 Michel Cuhaci (Ottawa, ON Canada) 145 out of 183 found this review helpful
UPDATED (Feb 2 and Feb 10,09): I received a new copy from the author himself on Christmas Day, hand delivered (for more info please read follow-up comments to this review). The book is excellent, very clear and easy to follow. My rating of 1 star (based on the first book I received, since I could not read the full content of the misprinted issue) now could be changed to 5 star. However, if I change it to 5 star, most review readers could miss the "happy ending" (read follow-up comments), and the Author's concern and excellent service on a winter stormy day... (By the way, I did not ask for a refund from Amazon since the author gave me a new copy the next day). For a complete story you can also go to:

ORIGINAL REVIEW, based on received book (Dec 24, 08): This book was supposed to be a Christmas gift... I received it on time yesterday, but the book, new and never used, was missing the first 38 pages!!! I was hoping at least Amazon checked to see if the printing was OK before they ship it! At least open the cover and see if page 1 is there...
Since the Softcover book binding is perfect, I suspect all the books in this batch are printed with missing first 38 pages, therefore I asked for refund.
I never had a quality control problem with Amazon until this one but buyer beware...
