1 out of 5 stars The worst book ever written on the subject!   May 13, 2000

This is the worst book ever written on the subject. Professors often assign it, but students hate it. The author tried to cramp too much in the book, withough adequate explanation. The material is presented the worst way possible.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for anyone needing a jump-start   May 7, 1999

This book has been written in a 'non-classical' style, i.e. it DOES NOT have long tracts of explanatory text, leaving things to the imagination of a beginner or the competence of a teacher (!!). The profusion of examples helped me get a hang of the intricacies of hypothesis testing for instance, after I had lost all hope and had an examination facing me. Yes i topped the class (no joke!!!). There is also on the other hand no condecension in leaving out the more complex themes (as in some other books that go under similar titles). On the down-side, it is BIG. And the hardcover edition expensive!! But definitely worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to practical business statistics   January 3, 1999

Statistics, more than any other mathematical discipline, suffer from the GIGO (garbage-in garbage-out) syndrome. However, the book from Wonnacott gives a pretty broad introduction to a range of practical techniques for data analysis. When you're confronted with a paralysing amount of data, releasing some of the statistical tools will allow you to draw meaningful conclusions. Many of the statistical tools are available in simple Excel. Once you've gone as far as you can with Excel, specialised statistical packages are available.
