An inspiring reflection on money and more February 19, 2009 Rolf Dobelli (Switzerland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This inspiring work by John C. Bogle, one of the great financial innovators in American history, sounds like an echo of the distant past. Indeed, he calls for a return to 18th century values, and uses such words as "virtue" and "character" to describe his vision of how the financial system should be constituted. Many of the themes Bogle strikes will be familiar to readers acquainted with his other works. However, with the American financial system in crisis, his critique gains a new resonance. Indeed, readers may detect a striking parallel between author Bogle's call for professional responsibility in the financial services industry and President Barack Obama's call for greater responsibility within society at large. Let getAbstract be the first to confirm that this book is clearly a product of its times.

Timely. A book more about life than investing. February 13, 2009 NYPAUL61 (Laurel Hollow, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is timed perfectly, given the times we live in and the current state of the markets. I think that Bogle hit the proverbial nail on the head on most topics. Without giving away the text of the book, I think the author does a great job to illustrate how many of the "masters of the universe" running Wall Street let us all down in their own personal pursuit of untold riches.
By the way, this is not a negative book. I love that Mr. Bogle asserts that one of the most provident aspects of his life was to be born in the United States. He also speaks of the unlimited opportunties available in our great land. Acres of diamonds! If he could just get off of his index fund soapbox! Please - I might even have to say Enough!
Mr. Bogle spends most of the book speaking to issues of life and he is correct about the things that are truly important in life. He speaks to the truly important things in life - raising a family, character, principles, Faith in God. This book is more about life than money. And, on most every issue- Mr. Bogle is right on.
The first paragraph of the book is one of the best little anecdotes I have ever read. And, the ensuing 250 or so pages fill in the moral of that little anecdote.
Little more than common sense February 8, 2009 Dr. William J. Casper 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book is little more than the all too common call for a return to the good old days when you could trust the finacial world to do the right thing. It's going to take a lot more than a nice little book to get the job done. It would be a lot better if Mr. Bogle used his foundation's money to help the truly needy not those who are going to a private academy or Princeton.
