Great for overall idea of test, however lacking on practice questions August 16, 2009 Bina (Austin, TX USA) I had two weeks to prepare for the GRE. This book was great - made me more comfortable and gave me a great idea of the subject matter and the methods of approach. The Dummies book is an easy fun read - definitely manageable in under a week. However, as far as practice questions go, the Dummies book isn't enough. I bough a Princeton Review book just for the practice questions, and downloaded the PowerPrep software from the ETS website for practice tests. This combination is perfect and will get you a great score.
All I needed to prepare for the GRE August 14, 2009 Zachary Pavol (zpavol) This book did a great job of helping to make GRE preparation seem reasonable. I went from knowing nothing about the GRE to 2-weeks later scoring a 1230 (670 math; 560 verbal). The only specific GRE preparation I had was this book. I highly recommend it. If you're someone who is looking for a 1400+ score, the only additional preparation I would recommend is the Barron's word list, which I didn't feel like taking the time to study.
Easy to use book but needs supplement. August 11, 2009 E. Castillo (NC, USA) I recently took the GRE and to prep for the test I used this Dummies book. The book was easy to read, entertaining and very informative. I felt a lot less nervous about the test because the book told me what to expect. The math review was good and I think I would have done better on the verbal part if I had memorized the vocabulary words they provided in the book. The only reason the book does not get 5 stars is because there was math on the GRE not covered in the book. I think that another book in combination with this book would have helped to better prepare me. All in all though I would recommend the book.
Stick to Kaplan August 3, 2009 rkm 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Being that it has been awhile since I have taken any math, I had heard the GRE for Dummies book was the best for brushing up. However, I have found it to be useless. Unfortunately, it lacks proper explanations and the examples are confusing. I have had much better luck using random math websites and Kaplan's prep book.

I love this book. I had 3 short weeks to study for the GRE. No algebra or geometry since I graduated high school - in 1976. (and I wasn't that great then). I felt much better after this review though. I also bought a math review book from kaplan. It was really good for longer explanations. But the Dummies book cut to the chase. The verbal secion was great also. I didn't really study the analytical writing section because of time constraints. I did read the tips though and they were good. I know I would not have obtained an over 800 score needed to get into the program without this book. My math was low in the 300's but my verbal in the 500's. without this book I wouldn't have made it though. It was a Godsend. I bought another book "The Princeton Review" I looked at it, but the Dummies book seemen much better. If you have more time and need help in math, the Kaplan workbook is really good too.
