book review October 22, 2009 Tina Lynn Dyer (Az.) I was told by a friend that this book would be a great aid to helping with my mothers stroke. It is a very interesting book, but it deals with a stroke caused by a brain hemmorage. My mom had a stroke due to a small blood clot that was caught very quickly. This book is written well and as I said, was very interesting, but had very little aid for our circumstances. Even though it had a bit of technical stuff in it, it is easy to read and is written more as a biography type noval. I recomend it to people that are interested in how our brains work or might know people that have had a brain hemmorage.
My Stroke of Insight October 14, 2009 Helen Yu (Taipei Taiwan) This book is very good for me to know the different functions between left and right brains. The writer's stroke experience was quite impressive.
A natural experiment reveals stunning insight October 10, 2009 cassdog (Gainesville, Fl USA) I first heard about this author when I was literally mesmerized by a talk with her on NPR. I was in the middle of dealing with a major medical issue like the author, so the author's words were especially powerful. I quickly grabbed the book and zoomed through it. This book works on so many levels like virtually no other books I've read and only fails on one level. You couldn't describe a more perfect tagline for a fascinating book, 'Brilliant brain scientist has massive stroke and returns to tell the story in an extremely informed manner'. Think of it as scientific researcher in to the complexities of the mind, running an experiment on their own mind and you will get the idea. The author's insights in to the workings of the brain, particularly the differences between the left and right hemisphere are fascinating. This narrative also works as a patients-advocate book. The author gives insights in to the experience of being a patient to try and improve conditions for other patients. Lastly the book works as a self-help book. Her unique visit in to the world of the right hemisphere can illuminate and improve your life. The book only slightly fails when she ventures in to New-Agey territory and personal experiences that aren't really backed by much science. But this is a completely fascinating book.
Changed My Mind/Life October 9, 2009 RiverSinger (Withlacoochee, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought this would be a good read, but I didn't expect it to change my life. It did. I have now read and reread it 5 times and will continue to reread it until it is completely absorbed. For me, it connected dots from many things I have read or watched, such as the dvd What the Bleep Do We Know? and the Dalai Lama's Mind/Life series of books. I bought 3 copies so I could loan out 2 and still have 1 to read, but I loaned out mine, too. I so think that others need to know about our right brain function. Now I guess I'll buy another. =)
