Great help for self-educating types October 11, 2009 Tiffany M. Chappel (Pennsylvania USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Once my daughter, who is now 11, and I finally gave the books, Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math, a chance we were very impressed. My daughter has always taken responsibility for her own education, so if she chooses to use a particular book often, I take notice. She likes that, while so many explanations may be long, they are never presented in a dry manner. The first reason I had not mentioned them to her earlier was because I felt that she was not a "girly girl" and wouldn't like the style of the books, but it turns out that a person need not be "girly" at all. I was also surprised that she was able to identify, and even enjoy, the stories peppered throughout the books that focus on mainstream school topics, even though she is home educated. We had originally borrowed them from the library, but quickly realized that these were keepers and purchased them. They work well for the purposes of learning a concept the first time, and as a reference book. I have not noticed my sons giving these books any attention, so I am not yet sure if they would have much value to boys, but they seem like they would be great for most girls, whether they are "girly" or not.
Pre Algebra excellence October 9, 2009 Mariella Palmer (Denver, CO United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My granddaughter is thoroughly enjoying this second book by Danica McKellar. She read the first one and it definitely helped her math grade. With this one, she's using it as a refresher. She's already into Algebra but says the teacher goes too fast sometimes so when she's working on her homework, she refers to Kiss My Math to remember the formulas and explanations. She's brought her Algebra grade up from a C to a B with the help of this book. Keep up the good work Danica!

My granddaughter was selected to be in a special program going into 6 th grade.
She had to take Pre Algebra and she was scared to death. The school issued a worksheet for her to review over the summer and that really scared her.
I found Danica's books and they spoke to Alyssa's heart. Kiss My Math, as well as Danica's first book speaks to kids, in a way, I have never experienced. Lyssa, who is very much a girly girl, read the book like a novel. She lingered on every word, it told a story of doing algebra, not just the formulas and the explainations of theory, it told the story of a child learning to do algebra. Here is what I saw everynight, Alyssa doing her math homework with her math book / worksheet and both of Danica's books open on either side of her. Lyssa got straight A's in pre algebra and now is in grade 7 and doing algebra 1. She very much looks forward to Danica's next book on math. Thank you, Danica!
It's a helpful tool September 18, 2009 Alyssa K. Voth 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is great for girls that struggle with math. It makes math not so intimidating and scary. Even though the book doesn't cover all state standards it does help with the difficult units of math. I'm doing a research paper for my senior project over this book and how girls can get excited about the subject. I think math teachers should have her books in the classroom to get girls really pumped up for math.
excelling at school is cool August 15, 2009 cp3 (New York, N.Y. United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
With all the bad influences out there (the pop stars who forget their undergarments, the heiresses who have one boyfriend after the other) girls need something to help them feel good about themselves. They need to know that it is ok not to sing or dance; that it is ok to be smart, to excel at school. Kiss My Math is not only successful at accomplishing the above; it also helps girls with math. What more could you ask for? Even if your daughter isn't having problems at math, get her this book. It will show her that excelling at school is cool and help her see math in a new light.
