I am actually still reading, but so far so good. My sister heard great things about the book as well and wants to borrow it when I'm done to help her with her little ones.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the cries of cruelty   August 31, 2009

What aggravates me the most about negative reviews is that some people don't seem to have read, or understood, the book. I've read it front to back several times and it is frustrating to see the advice mis characterized. Until a baby is at least 4 months, Dr. Weisbluth advocates responding promptly to cries and taking whatever comfort measures are required to soothe your baby. After 4 months, most babies are able to begin learning self-soothing skills. Non-sleep related studies confirm this. From my experience, people who roughly follow his advice have good results. There are 8 young kids in our family, and 6 of us parents followed a modified version of CIO. The 2 who did not follow the advice have children (ages 15 months and 2 years) with major sleep issues - lack of sleep, erratic sleep patterns, night waking, etc. The other 6 children have generally excellent sleep habits. They consistently sleep thru the night, have good and consistent nap habits, etc. It is to children's benefit that they learn to soothe themselves to sleep. If you are not comfortable with CIO, you may not enjoy the book. It has a lot of great advice, but you may not be able to get beyond the CIO suggestions. It is important to note that Dr. Weissbluth says that your babies sleep issues are only problems if you view them as such.

2 out of 5 stars Dense reading   August 30, 2009
Kristin Harper (Austin, TX USA)
This is known for being such a resource for research on sleep, but I had a hard time staying with it. It reads more like a text book which is not something I could swallow as a new mom. I respect it for what it has contributed, but if you are a new parent, it may be difficult to continue to pick up (especially with your own sleep deprivation).

5 out of 5 stars The book that finally helped us   August 25, 2009
Patricia Williams (Virginia Beach, VA)
My 10 month old baby was waking up every 2,3 hours at night, and it was driving me insane!! After reading many books including the no-cry sleep solution for babies, I was desperate for a solution to our sleep problem. I got this book and read the chapters that interested me and decided I needed to give it a try. I hated the idea of letting my baby cry, but I was desperate for a good night of sleep. I tried the first night and my baby cried and screamed for about half hour, and he took about another half hour to go back to sleep on his own. He woke up another time, but he only cried for about 15 min. I couldn't believe it!!! The second night he woke up once and cried for about 15 min. and went back to sleep. Since then he's been sleeping through the night, sometimes he wakes up, cries for 2 min. and goes back to sleep. I am back to my old self again, happy and enjoying life as a mom. When he was waking up many times at night I was very upset, tired, depressed. I thought it was going to be horrible letting my baby cry but it wasn't bad at all. I would recomend this book to other parents, it changed my perspective about letting a baby cry.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Advice   August 25, 2009
H. Waite-Grover (Salt Lake City, UT)
While this book is a little dense, I appreciated the thorough discussion of newborns' and older children's sleep habits. I had read way too many "get rich quick" books on getting your baby to sleep (12 hours of sleep in 12 weeks! etc. etc.), so I liked this book's explanations of the changes in babies' sleep patterns (both night time and napping) from birth through the toddler years. I followed its advice in many regards, and it helped both when my baby was a few months old (and I was trying to help her sleep through the night) and when she hit about a year old (and her daytime napping became a struggle). It is, admittedly, a little thick, so be prepared to read. However, for parents who want more detail as oppose to less when trying to get their baby to sleep better, this book fits just right.
