Working on Happy, Healthy habits September 28, 2009 Stephanie L. Chase (Fairview, Pa) The book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child had been very helpful in working on getting my baby to sleep better. I think the book gives you a new perspective on how important sleep is and how mush sleep is needed. I only wish I would have bought this book prior to my baby being born. She is now 9 months and some of the material would have worked better when she was younger. Like any book, you have to take what works for you and use it and disregard what doesn't work for you and your family. I have been putting her to sleep at 7am, and she is so much happier when she wakes up. I have had to adapt to that as well, because our schedule has changed, but it has been very positive.
Very Helpful to Understand Sleep Cycles September 22, 2009 Addybear (Dallas, TX) I don't agree with the cry-it-out method that this book seems to promote. But, I found it really helpful to understand sleep cycles at different ages (newborn and beyond). This book taught me that babies need a lot more sleep than people typically allow and that keeping a baby up doesn't usually result in more sleep at night. It was a great guide for me even though I didn't follow the cry-it-out parts.
I never could do the cry-it-out method with my daughter. She was sleeping through the night in her crib by 8 months. It felt like it would never happen, but we just kept trying. I started putting her to bed in her crib at night. Then when she would wake up for her mid-night feeding, I let her sleep in a co-sleeper. Eventually, I started putting her back in the crib after her night-time feeding. I also didn't rush in when she started to fuss. I always gave her a chance to go back to sleep before I went in the room unless I could tell she was starting to get really upset. By about 8 months she was sleeping through the night. Ever since she has gone to bed without a fuss at 7pm and wakes at 7am (with naps during the day)! I just lay her down, kiss her goodnight, and walk away--No tears. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it!!
More evidence-based knowledge, please! September 8, 2009 Shawn A. Cole (cambridge, ma) A basic problem with books in this area is that very little is "known" in a scientific sense, through studies that can be replicated. It's tough to do studies on children, and few families would presumably agree to allow a doctor to randomly assign them to sleep program A or sleep program B.
Weissbluth speaks of scientific studies in the book, but never gives references (why not?) to the actual studies, so it's hard to konw whether the study is some graduate student who observed five babies over a four hour period, or a large longitudinal study invovling 1,000 babies over five years.
Most of the book is anecdote, and i am reasonably sure that weissbluth selected the anecdoates to make his advice look good, rather than a statistically representative sample of people.
That said, this program worked for us in two nights, with maybe 1 hour of crying total, and our daughter appears happier now during the days.
The distribution of amazon reviews (over 1,000 data points) seems to suggest that the program will work on 80% of babies, and not on 20%. Luckily, we were in the 80%.
Very disappointing September 8, 2009 Bouddhableu (Houston, TX) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
As the mother of a baby who was very fussy and a terrible sleeper, I bought this book out of desperation. And it didn't help us out at all. I found it to be scattered and poorly organized, and, contrary to Dr. Weissbluth's opinion, while CIO may work for some babies, it certainly won't for every baby, and it never would have for mine. If you have a sleepless newborn or infant, do yourself a favor and buy "The 90-minute Sleep Solution" by Polly Moore, PhD. She is a sleep researcher and a mom, and her book is the only one that presents a clear plan that will absolutely work. Her plan works because it is based on recognizing and using the biological clock that all babies have. At 3 months of age my baby was sleeping 9-12 hours a day, woke up constantly all night long, took almost no naps and was a screaming mess. Now, after consistently following Dr. Moore's plan, he is sleeping 14+ hours a day, waking only 1-2 times a night to feed, napping beautifully and consistently and best of all is calm and happy when he's awake. Life is sooooo much easier now. And this wasn't magic, it was a good plan.
I love sleep September 5, 2009 Heather J. Cebollero 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am actually still reading, but so far so good. My sister heard great things about the book as well and wants to borrow it when I'm done to help her with her little ones.
