VERY helpful book with a few recipes included September 23, 2009 Jenny S.H. (Oahu/Big Island, Hawaii) I already wrote a review for Cook Right 4 Your Type, and if you want to go straight to the recipes, buy that one. This has more detailed information about the history of blood types, blood components and has the food charts and a few recipes. I like both books but the cookbook has more updated food listings and information. I do suggest getting both because you gain a better understanding of what this diet is all about.
Rational Diet September 20, 2009 Reardan Steel (Bandon, Oregon 97411) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. D'Adamo's book is a diet book. The first thing that comes to mind when the word "diet" is mentioned is this is a book for losing weight. From Wikipedia, "In nutrition, the diet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism." When Dr. D'Adamo discusses diet he means in this book he puts forth a theory that connects one of 30,000 genes in the human genome namely the gene for blood type with a specific group of foods that benefit one of the four blood types in the ABO blood typing system. It happens that this specific regimen does usually result in the loss of weight for persons who are over weight. However, the book is much more than this. Dr. D'Adamo has collected together the results of his own research and those published in respected refereed journals listed in the book. He then integrated this material into a coherent theory with a set of suggestions for meals for individuals who wish to attempt to improve their health.
What is delightful about the book is that it covers just enough of the theory without going too deep to validate his approach. Beginning with each blood type a short general description is given concerning beneficial foods and those that inhibit metabolic functions. This is followed by lists of specific foods, menus, and supplement lists as appropriate. Thusly, by blood type the reader sees that at least in theory how he can lower bad cholesterol; normalize triglicerides; normalize metabolic rate; normalize thyroid hormone production; normalize calorie utilization; decrease digestive toxins; and the list could go on and on. Thusly, this is a book about radically changing your health and not just losing weight. Reviewers on these pages have stated that weight loss does occur as well without necessarily reducing food intake. Significantly, the book has been translated into at least 26 languages and has been an international best seller every year since its publication about 15 years ago. This review was written in 2009.
I have never had a weight problem - always instead looking for ways to improve general health and longevity. I found the book in 1996 and began the diet almost immediately as I knew my blood type. I found that my general well being energy, stamina, fatigue all improved radically. I also was never quite able to find beneficial foods on my own because most of what I was eating were foods that happened to have some negative effect on my well being. The diet is not perfect and I believe that each person will find some foods that are touted to be good for his blood type whilest they may not be for reasons unique to them. My blood type is A and I found that I can not eat oatmeal. Having followed the other tonic foods for type A, it was easy to weed out the oatmeal. I have found that during periodic physicals blood parameters have improved as well. Significantly, I did go ahead and get a detailed blood analysis that told me secretor status; and Rh factor; M, N group; and Lewis a/b group. Interestingly, some foods shifted slightly from those in the book in terms of whether they were tonic foods or neutral foods. None of the shifts in my case went to "avoids." These results gave me further confirmation this revolutionary theory. For example as an "A" peanuts are tonic foods according to the book. Whereas, the more detailed analysis shifted peanuts to neutral or foods that should be eaten once or twice a week. This is consistent with experiment since I do fine on peanuts as long as I don't eat too many of them.
One comment on the negative reviews. First, I view their relatively small number for the honest ones as a confirmation that the blood type diet does work for most people. Second, it looks like a fair number of these reviewers did not read the book, saying for example there was no evidence for the validity of the diet. Whereas Dr. D'Adamo presents much supporting material in the book from external sources including reputable journal research papers.
If there is one thing each individual could do to reduce their cost of health care it would be to follow the recommended diet for their blood type in this book.
Dry but good info September 14, 2009 Donald J. Harris (Maryland)
The book provides detailed info on the most compatible food for each particular blood type. It is slow, dull reading but good info. It was what I expected in this type of book.
Worth the money! September 11, 2009 R. Somero (New Ipswich, NH) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am very happy to have purchased this book. It explains the blood type diet very well. Helps you realize why you would want to eat for your blood type!! When you know what "bad" foods for your blood type does to your body, you don't want to eat them!
An answer to pray. Thank God August 31, 2009 Lornette (Nevis) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book answer my pray. I was getting sick for some time now. Especially after eating. I went to many doctors and they did all type of test and they all show nothing was wrong with me. After going to the hospital and many doctors and they telling me it is all in head. I started searching the internet for answers. Some of my symptoms were headaches, my heart will go so fast, blood pressure will go up, numbleness, sinus, etc.
My blood type is B positive and when i read that wheat and chicken were bad for me. That was the answer and now I don't eat them and don't have those problems. It is a miracle. sometimes I just cry to see I found the answer. my heart don't go like before, sinus gone, my blood pressure don't go up when I eat.
Thank God. I told my doctor that wheat was the one that was doing me so bad and now he says maybe your mom have the same problem, she is B positive too and my doctor (medical) say maybe it is wheat giving her high blood pressure so now my mother don't buy wheat bread now.
