Son, you don't know what it's like to have it tough! March 17, 2005 yoshele If you have any doubts as to the extreme limits of perseverance that humans (and life, for that matter) will go to survive, then read this true story. Even the toughest of you should be humbled by the courage, leadership, toil, risk-taking, and survival skills displayed by the men of the Endurance.
The upshot of the story is a crew of 27 men set sail on a ship called the Endurance to be the first to cross the Antarctica continent by foot. Their plans are cut short when the ice pack siezes their ship and the men are forced to live on the ship and then on the ice for a LONG time. With no chance for rescue, the men know that their fate lies in their hands.
Several books have been written about the Endurance adventure. I couldn't imagine the others being any better than this one. The story tells itself and stands alone so little side commentary is needed or provided. The pictures in this hard-cover edition are fabulous and add to the story.
And, I might add, this book would certainly give hope to anyone stuck in a bad situation.
I could feel the cold February 28, 2005 Paul Amdahl I could not put this book down. It humbles me to think that men like this have existed in this world. Every petty trouble melts away when compared to the Shackleton crew. The photographs are also great. Caroline Alexander did wonderful job!
The Endurance November 29, 2004 Jonathan Jones (Chicago, IL USA) A facinating story of triumph. Caroline Alexander has done a wonderful job of taking the reader back to the romatic era of global exploration. I was amazed at the struggles that Shackleton and his crew faced. The details that are included in this non-fiction story coupled with the stunning photographs highlight the daily adventures of the crew, and bring the reader along for the ride. This retelling of the Antarctic journey of The Endurance is an encouragement to press on through hard times. Excellent book.

A good little read, especially for those who think they have it difficult. I had not known of Shackelton's amazing voyage until I read this book. Alexander certainly has done the research to draw on the what happened when the Endurance got stuck in the ice and Sir Ernest's boat journey to South Georgia island. It is amazing to find how Shackelton led his men to their salvation dispite all the difficulties they faced with survival in the Arctic.
This book is amply supplied with photographs from the journey with suitable explanations. As stated previously, Alexander has done a great job detailing the history of the trip, along with short biographies of the key players in the expedition. The photos (all black and white) are simply great to look through. A good read.
Gripping, interesting, well written August 8, 2004 D. Logemann (San Clemente, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great book! I don't normally read non-fiction books, so this book is outside of the norm for me. I highly recommend it for anyone. It is so well written, that you feel like you're on the journey with them. Extremely interesting! A great read. It made me cry when they were rescued.
