5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for Medical Students!   February 17, 2010

By far, this text is one of the best that I have purchased while in medical school. I recommend purchasing this book during your first or second year to use during your basic science courses, and then refer back to it for board studying.

5 out of 5 stars BRS vs. Goljian   February 17, 2010

I used my BRS through the first quarter and a half and decided to give Goljian a try after numerous recommendations from classmates. I wish (x 1000) I had used Goljian instead from the beginning. To put it simply, Goljian is a happy medium between Robbins and BRS in that Robbins has good details to help you understand the material while BRS for the most part simply tells you what you see in diseases without explaining reasons and the processes (for the most part....so it does provide brief explanations at times). However, in my opinion Goljian's true strong point is that many times it explains concepts the way say your 'smart' friend would on concepts. Have you ever been confused about a topic by reading text books or after lectures only to have your friend explain the concept in 2 minutes and you end up thinking "Why couldn't others explain it like this?" I think BRS is designed to be a different beast. It's designed to be a highlights of diseases so that if you can recall the background knowledge/processes of diseases by reading what's provided in BRS, it's a good book. Goljian explains things much more so that even without reading Robbins (not all the time) you can really understand what is going on with diseases and why/how they happen. Again, nothing beats Robbins in terms of thoroughness. But, view Goljian as that 'smart' friend who is good at explaining things. Again, I really wish I would have used it rather than BRS from the beginning of my M2 year.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Goljan's the man!   February 7, 2010

This author is hilarious! If you've ever listened to any of his lectures, you'd know wat I mean. This book is great for reviewing all the pertinent subjects in path and covers everything appropriately. We use it in our PBL sessions and it's actually faster to reference things through it than the big books. It also gives you access to online USMLE questions if you buy the books with unscratched codes! Word of caution, do not use it for your sole source of pathology...

5 out of 5 stars Forget the BRS   January 24, 2010

Golgan has been known for his great books and this is no exception. I bought this book as a supplement to FA 2010 as well as for my pathophys class, worked alright for the class but great for FA.

3 out of 5 stars Not for those with ADH   January 22, 2010

If you can stand to read long lists of pathology characteristics, Goljan is your man. I gave up on him and went for BRS, because they have the ultra-important high yields highlighted, when your attention span is low, and they are overall more concise. Personally, I find going through many questions and annotating First Aid to be more useful than sorting through Goljan's tables and lists, but the information is certainly high yield.
