Poorly prepared textbook... February 16, 2009 E. Hanneman (Sonoran Desert, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have just started reading this book (7th edition) for class and came across an error that really surprised me on page 536: "Acute viral rhinitis (common cold or acute coryza) is caused by an adenovirus that invades the upper respiratory tract and often accompanies an upper respiratory infection (URI)." No mention is made of any other viruses that cause the common cold. Indeed, there are more than 200 known causes of acute viral rhinitis with the most prevalent being: rhinovirus, coronavirus, respiratory synctial virus, adenovirus, parainfluenza, influenza, enterovirus, metapneumovirus, and other unknown viruses (source: Lancet). I am thinking the authors wanted to highlight the fact that adenoviruses are more likely than some other viruses (e.g., rhinovirus) to lead to complications, but failed to do so before the book was printed and/or a writer that knew nothing about microbiogy just slapped down adenovirus related to the common cold (the most frequent manifestation of the adenovirus is the common cold --but it is not the most frequent virus causing the common cold).
I can't help but wonder what other errors I am going to discover as I continue to read this book --and what errors I won't recognize.
Additionally, as another critic mentioned, the pages are terribly thin.
Overall, I am giving this book a one as I think substantial errors should not be in a textbook, especially one that is in the 7th edition.
