What I think May 31, 2009 Virgil L. Mize (US Air Force, Germany) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I must admit the I too bought this book under the impression that it was going to be more towards the photography side than the special effects. Bad on me for that. Having said that I discovered that what is in the book really did it justice. I read book cover to cover and found it a great source of info. I actually read different sections almost daily just to keep the tricks in the back of my mind. Now about the uproar over the reviews. There is a saying in the military. " One oh crap wipes out a thousand that a boys". I hope that does not become the case with this book. It a good book. Also I do hope that Scott Kelby is not so insecure that 2 bad reviews really gets him that spun up. I think it's more of a sales tactic which is also acceptable (Hey business is business). I give this book 4 stars. There is always room for improvement. Keep'em coming Scott.
Scott Kelby's Down and Dirty Tricks, in all it's versions, is the best thing to ever happen to my career. May 30, 2009 David O. Cuerdon 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Dear Scott:
My first contact with you was at your Down and Dirty seminar you did in Chicago, 2001.
That day literally changed my life!
I had been a photographer for over 20 years, a digital pioneer, going all digital shooting beauty and fashion in 1995.
That day I took your seminar was the day I not only realized the true potential of Photoshop, but I saw a glimpse of my own true potential as an artist. I left that day with a copy of Down and Dirty Tricks and the wonderful feeling of, "I can do this!!!"
I have never looked back!...except with the utmost gratitude.
All I can say is that Scott Kelby's Down and Dirty Tricks, in all it's versions, is the best thing to ever happen to my career. Without Scott and this book I would still be a bitter, staff, catalog photographer somewhere.
Thanks Scott.
Sincerely,
David Cuerdon
Killer tips as always May 30, 2009 Eric C. Booth (Raleigh, NC) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been a huge fan of Scott for many years and have purchased pretty much every Photoshop book he has written starting with Down and Dirty Tricks for Photoshop 7. I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanna be designer. Scott's teaching style makes learning photoshop for both Photographers and Designers very easy and straight forward. Now I know this book is not geared toward photographers, and why should it be, but I find that the techniques taught in the book are able to be transferred over to my photography business in the form of marketing materials. Thanks again Scott for a great book.
P.S. Don't let a couple one stars get ya down. The majority of the reviewers actually understand that this is not a photo enhancement book.
P.S.S. Waiting on pins and needles for the 3rd installment of the Digital Photography books. Loved the first 2.
Anything Kelby Writes is Fun to Read May 29, 2009 Frank L. Kollman (Baltimore, Maryland USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this book because I missed Kelby's seminar of the same title in DC. His writing style is great, and he is one of the best teachers I have encountered. I will not use this book as much as the other 6 titles I have from Kelby, but there are many neat tricks in the book that will bring some fun back to my photography. Even if you don't use any of the tricks, it is a great read.
Kelby's loyal readers respond ... May 29, 2009 Gandharva 30 out of 46 found this review helpful
This morning, May 29th Scott Kelby complained in his blog that some Amazon customers had written, "Some really harsh reviews because the book isn't what they expected." Well, actually two people - that's right, only two - had given it one star. One reviewer said people should preview a store copy before buying and another said the book wasn't so helpful to him as an intermediate Photoshop user. Both commented that other Kelby books had been useful. In his blog, Kelby attributed the negative reviews to customer misunderstanding. He says the focus of his latest book, rather than covering digital photography, it is "to teach all the latest Photoshop special effects." This despite the fact that Kelby is well known as an author of several digital photography books plus books on Photoshop and Lightroom that are aimed primarily at digital photographers. In addition, the first bullet point in the product description for this book is "The latest photographic special effects."
So Kelby made an appeal for help in his blog this morning. Offended by two negative reviews, he reached out to his loyal followers and said, "Any ideas you have to help me get this message out to potential readers (before I have an average review of 1-star, which at this rate won't be long), I'm all ears." Well, it didn't take long. As of 10:45 am CDT there were 92 comments to his blog, many of them trashing the ignorance of Amazon reviewers who had the audacity to give a Kelby book less than five stars. In addition, several Kelby fans have now posted five-star reviews on Amazon. Take a look - at least seven of the first 13 reviews were posted on May 29th and all of them are in sharp contrast to the two negative reviews posted earlier.
Look, we all know that many Amazon reviews reflect popularity and personal preference rather than unbiased critical analysis. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's what consumer reviews are all about. We have to live with that. Kelby does too. Any attempt by an author to manipulate reviews (even indirectly) on a website that sells his books for the expressed purpose of bringing up the average rating of his book is a dubious practice. Further, it is not what we would like to see from such a distinguished author.
Scott Kelby has written a number of outstanding books and is an unquestioned expert in his field. I personally own four of his books and have found them to be an excellent value. And I will continue to buy his books. Right now I'm looking forward to the third installment of The Digital Photography Book series. It's just that Kelby shouldn't get so bent out of shape about two lousy reviews.
