3 out of 5 stars Great book but Kindle edition doesn't cut it   March 8, 2009

I really wanted to purchase this book for my Kindle 2 so I could reference it wherever I go. Unfortunately, the conversion to Kindle format made it much more difficult to read, mostly due to the fact that the code samples do not format correctly on the device. I imagine that the book needs to be re-converted to make use of the fixed-width font capabilities that are present in the newer Kindle software. Until they fix the formatting for Kindle, the print version is the only one I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars High quality book, but mostly trivia   March 3, 2009

I think this is a high quality book, along with its sequel "More effective C++."
However, if you already have enough experience in programming or at the very least have been "book smart" by reading Stroustrup or Lippman, you do not need to waste your money and time investing in this book.

I picked up the book after reading enough books in C++, I immediately saw the "diminishing returns of investment" on reading books relative to the same topics. This means that this book, although excellent to be fair, does not stand out by offering anything new that I have not known from somewhere else.

I would rate this book 4-star as at least it does not contain wrong messages. Just venture out a little and see how many jokes you will find in the authors that claim themselves experts.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book.   February 5, 2009

I am a professional C++ programmer, I develop in C++ and Object oriented Technologies from 1993.
I am reading this book, just finished the 2nd chapter and I just wondering how many other secrets I missed till now.
It's a surprise even for the veterans of C++. If you program in C++, you cannot miss that.
(I will surely read even the following books of teh series, "More Effective C++" and "Effective STL")

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Must Own C++ Title!   December 4, 2008

This Book should be on every C++ programmers shelf
i think no matter who you are or what level of experience you have
this book will teach regardless.

this book seems to be mainly about taking what you know and giving it an in-depth boost, i guess you could say the title says it all.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious C++ user   November 12, 2008
Pat Choi (L.A., CA United States)
Simply said: this book is a `must' for any serious user of the language. Wish I had this book when I was learning C++ (hopefully, more instructors alike would start recommending book like this to their students). Once you have mastered the basic syntax, this book will give you a boost to your C++ knowledge.

Also recommend getting the sequel ' More Effective C++ ' by the same author and after that, ` Modern C++ Design' by Andrei Alexandrescu.
