Is there anything better than a new Michael Connelly? Scarecrow is the best one since The Poet, which was the one that hooked me in the first place!
Boring and not scared by The Scarecrow September 13, 2009 coalpuss (USA) I purchased quite a few books prior to some scheduled surgery and rehab and one was Connelly's "The Scarecrow" in hardcover! Usually I am more frugal, but then I thought he is usually good so damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. A shame, really. I did not care for "The Scarecrow" and found my mind wandering as I really tried to become interested in this reporter who was being downsized and wanted to go out with one big story under his belt. The one interesting character was killed off early (don't want to spoil for those who have not read the book) and my interest went downhill also. Connelly is capable of writing a much more compelling book and perhaps I just like Bosch more than McEvoy. I am also tired of Rachel and her FBI persona. We knew who the bad guys were, but I did not find the pursuit at all compelling. It was more like a formula book (as someone else has written) and the author went through the motions. He could have fleshed it out more, and I make a comparison here with Jeff Deaver's "The Broken Window," which also concerned some identity theft information and which was SO excellent I did not want to finish it. The Scarecrow was a waste of my money and time. I am pleased it satisfied some of Connelly's fans, but it just didn't make the grade with me. If you want a good writer, check out Michael Robotham who is new on the horizon and really writes, really!!!! I also purchased several of his books and he did not disappoint.
A Mostly Terrific Thriller September 13, 2009 Brett Benner (Los Angeles, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even though I have to agree with some other reviewers who felt the end was a bit of a letdown, I have to say that there's no other contemporary thriller mystery thriller writer today like Connelly. Most are content with barely eking out one book a year. Connelly this year will have two. Harry Bosch will be out in the middle of fall, but for now Connelly revisits reporter Jack McEvoy. Times are tough with papers going under, and society continuing to sink deeper in the digital world. Jack has become the latest victim of layoffs, and as he winds down his final two weeks, he hits a trip wire of what initially seems like a case of a murder suspect being wrongfully accused, to a serial killer whose signature killings are crossing state lines. The problem with any book that's high on suspense is how the final pages will play out satisfactorily, and here it's just okay. That said, it doesn't take away from a fun, well woven nail biter that will have you reading late into the night.

Michael Connelly has outdone himself in this one. It is riveting and we highly recommend it to everyone.
THE SCARCROW BY MICHAEL CONNELLY September 11, 2009 Margaret Ricketts (Ontario, Canada) I LOVED THE CONVENIENCE OF LISTENING TO THE BOOK ON DISC WHILE I WAS WEEDING MY GARDEN AND DOING THE IRONING. GREAT IDEA FOR A BUSY HOMEMAKER WHO LIKES TO READ BUT NEVER HAS TIME.
