Murder as entertainment... September 26, 2009 Denise (Missouri, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am kind of laughing while reading these reviews. Hey folks, lighten up. This book isn't that bad -- it was gory, yes, and full of lots of unnecessary violent killing -- but isn't that why you like this genre and why you picked up this Patterson novel? It's exactly the book you've come to associate with him and his team of co-authors. Fast-paced, short chapters, interesting premise with a twist, blood and guts murdering, and a nicely wrapped up ending?! You got what you wanted in this one.
This novel was about Ben Hawkins, an ex cop turned author and reporter, who meets up with a serial killer and ends up as his partner when the killer wants a true crime book written about his life and times. Henri is a snuff film killer who makes movies of the murders he commits and sells them to a group he refers to as the "Peepers". The tale is definitely suspenseful with the reader only wondering who is going to be killed next and assuming the worst. Everybody!
The reader never gets to know the supporting characters (the murdered ones) very well so there isn't a lot of agonizing over the serial deaths, but there is suspense and action -- and as said -- lots of gore as the descriptions of the killings are detailed.
This book was a quick read, definitely in the psycho thriller killer genre. Don't give it a lot of thought except to maybe wonder how many people like Henri are out there in the big bad world.
Get it from the library or borrow it from a friend -- I still think it will sell well!
I did not like it September 24, 2009 Alice in Wonderland 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
James B. Patterson is a well-known writer with a big reputation. Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the hype. The sex and violence is disturbing and revolting. I know, they were meant to be, but the depictions are too graphic and revolting. The storyline is not interesting, and rather too predictable.
Something went wrong when Mr. Patterson wrote this book. I think that the story didn't entirely jell, leaving the author to try and force it into shape, when the idea behind it just wasn't really ready to be put onto paper. The ending, especially, shows this.
No, Mr. Patterson is a genuinely good writer, and many of his books are quite good. This is just one clinker in a good career. Ignore it, and move on.

I have over 40 1st edition hardback books by James Patterson. I have ordered books from a few places and got something short of a 1st edition hardback. I like to know exactly what I am getting, so I don't have to go through the process of returning an item and begin to look anew. I also have a Kindle which I use for a lot of my paperbacks. I am very satisfied with Amazon; its store; service; and quick response to questions or problems. Hard to say how you could improve on that.
Master of Disguise September 21, 2009 L. Romich (Akron, oH) When Supermodel, Kim McDaniels, diappears from a photo shoot located in Hawaii, a mysterious, yet terrifying phone call is made to her parents. Soon afterward they board a plane to Maui in search of their daughter.
Ben Hawkins is an ex-cop that is now a reporter for the L.A. Times. He is assigned to report on the Kim McDaniels diappearance. The amateurishness of the local police department forces Ben to start his own investigation. Especially when more women disappear and are murdered. A coincidence? Or could it be the same person/persons that kidnapped and murdered Kim McDaniels?
Unbeknownst to Ben...the killer may be closer than he thinks. This killer is truly a master of disguise. The question is why is the killer targeting beautiful young women? When this question is answered you will be stunned.
SWIMSUIT by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro was a fast-paced read that will have you on the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, I did not feel this was the best thriller to date by Mr. Patterson. The question that lingers in my mind is...will there be a sequel?

Swimsuit September 19, 2009 John M. Haas (Northern Virginia) James,
You need to screen those helping you write. Hard to believe you put your name on this one. How about a vacation and then a good book (PS Don't put Trial in that category, Grisham wrote the book years ago)
