"Stupidity is also a gift of God, but one mustn't misuse it" - John Paul II November 15, 2009 L. Burns (New England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, it's wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. While not exactly high praise, it's the best I can do for this 15th installment in the Plum saga.
The plot ( there isn't one, but bear with me) revolves around finding the men responsible for the murder of a celebrity chef and solving the mystery of who has apparently infiltrated Ranger's security business.
Either the characters are tired or I've grown tired of the characters. I liked Ranger when he was just a sexy bounty hunter with a mysterious past, not the Bill Gates of the Trenton Security world. I liked Morelli before the ASPCA got a hold of him and neutered him. And I liked when Stephanie, inept bounty hunter that she is, at least had a little pride. Sleep with Ranger ? If the timing was right. Slash Joyce Barnhardt's tires when she made a move on Joe? Absolutely. Show a little ingenuity when trying to apprehend a skip - you bet. The Jersey Girl with her own unique style is gone, the "new" Stephanie is more like an overgrown puppy who just can't get the knack of housetraining.
So why 3 stars? Because for all its bad points I did think overall the book was OK. If you can abide the coarse and juvenile humor you do get to see Lula in all her spandex lovin' glory and Grandma Mazur, to use her own words, is a pip. I got this book used for about the price of a Latte at Starbucks. And like my overpriced cup of coffee it gave me a few minutes of enjoyment so I figure I got my money's worth.
Lots of Laughs November 15, 2009 J. Baker (South Carolina) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Celebrity chef, Stanley Chipotle, comes to town for a barbecue cook-off and Lula sees him get his head chopped off. Now, the killers are after Lula. Lula, Stephanie, Grandma Mazur, and Connie sign up for the cook-off thinking it will help them find the killers before they find Lula. In the meantime, someone is robbing RangeMan's accounts and Stephanie is trying to help Ranger find out who since it appears it could be an inside job.
You would think I would be tired of this series since we're at book fifteen now, not counting the between the numbers books. But, I'm not. I thought this was hilarious. How can you not laugh when Grandma Mazur and Lula get together? I will admit the whole Morelli/Ranger thing wears a little thin sometimes, but maybe that's because I can't eat donuts and fried chicken all the time and have two hot guys both pining for me. ;) Anyway, this is definitely not great literature, but if you're looking for a fun read and lots of laughs, this book is the way to go. I'm looking forward to the next installment in my "guilty pleasure" series.
One big problem November 11, 2009 Ani Stubbs (Japan) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Overall I really liked this book. Following past books Ranger has lost some of his Bad-A$$ness, but is still very hot. There is a funny plot with witty dialogue. My BIG problem was with Morelli letting Joyce into his house. He is now a total wimp and while I was on Team Morelli-this lapse in character style really bothered me. Enough to go from a 4 to a 3 in the rating.
Same old story November 4, 2009 Roger Long (Port Clinton, OH USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is funny enough, but it relies on the same devices as we have seen in the previous 14 books of the series. Stephanie Plum is the hapless, hopeless bounty hunter in Trenton, NJ. In each novel several of her cars are destroyed, one way or another. Her off and on romances with Ranger and Morelli never quite jell. The hamster goes around in his wheel. Ms Plum's grandmother causes disasters at the funeral home. And the fat ex-'ho assistant to Stephanie gorges herself on donuts, putting a serious strain on her spandex skirt.
Unfortunately the humor doesn't come from anything new, and much of it is crude--anal, if you will. Enough, already. Perhaps the series will contune until suckers like this one quit buying the books--which is now, for me. My recommendation is to put this to rest, create a new central character in a new occupation. And stop telling the same jokes.

Author Evanovich has said in an interview that Stephanie and crew will never age during the course of this series. Big mistake, because Stephanie never learns, never makes life-enhancing choices, never grows. In this 15th episode, the plot, such as it is, descends into slapstick. Once an author resorts to fat and fart humor to serve as the central mechanism to moving along the story, you know she's running out of ideas. This outing revolves loosely around Lula, who, having witnessed a murder, is in constant danger from the perps. A secondary thread concerns a string of robberies in establishments protected by Rangeman Securities. Not one, but at least four vehicles are bombed to smithereens. And formerly beloved characters are reduced to caricature.
Narrator Lorelei King does her usual professional best, but not even she can save this farce. Here's hoping Ms. Evanovich breaks her own rule and brings about some much needed change in Steph's life.
