Sad commentary on the literary trash that excites people today November 6, 2009 I feel sorry for you... 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Couldn't finish this one. After reading about the brutality toward the poor girl, I stopped and left the book in a hotel room far from home. I feel sorry for the author who seems to know too much about how to violate women (should be interesting to find out why) and the readers who gave such glowing reviews. Does assault and victomization really entertain those sad souls? Whatever happened to nurturing and protecting people? Larsson, you should be ashamed to write such trash.
sucked me i n! November 6, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
story started out slow. was not sure i wanted to co nti nue after the first 20 pages. glad i did. the characters were very real and i could picture them in my minds eye. before long i was totally immersed in the story. i have already bought the girl who played with fire. plan to read it right away.
Loved it November 5, 2009 Ella72 (NY, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't usally read murder mysteries, but I very much enjoyed reading this one. The only thing is in the beginning he throws so many names at you and they are Swedish names so that was even more difficult to keep track of. But as the story picks up you get more in to the caracters and really start enjoying the book. I highly recommend the book and don't give up if you get confused with the characters it all eventually falls in to place.
A cure for narcolepsy November 5, 2009 Ashley Mcgibeny I was awake frantically pressing "Page Forward" on my Kindle till 3am this morning & I'm a fully fledged narcoleptic !! Thank you Mr Larsson for a wonderfully unexpected page turner (or page forwarder or whatever we do nowadays :) )....
International Bestseller Should Be Worldwide Sensation November 4, 2009 Wolfe Moffat (Franklinville, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was 2nd best only to THE KITE RUNNER, and rightly so! I really enjoyed picking the brain of the late Stieg Larsson through THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. While he weaves this plot on some wild and icy curves, he aims his objective straight forward. And like a well shot arrow, this shoots straight through the center of the target with no other aim!
Without even thinking otherwise, we find ourselves pulling for Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who has set himself up, and will have to serve a small prison sentence. And we also find ourselves despising Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, despite his supposed well-earned victory over Blomkvist. And when you think all hope is lost for him, we find ourselves bracing for what Henrik Vanger has in store for him. At his request, Vanger wishes for Blomkvist to investigate a disappearance over forty years old, his niece, Harriet, in hopes that she isn't already dead. And while Blomkvist reluctantly agrees, he will do nothing but his best.
Eventually, enter Lisbeth Salander, a girl with a troubled past who gets down to business. At some point, Aspergers symptoms are pointed out in the you prodigy, yet her wit is not undermined. And together, Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander find something horrific, something possibly damaging to the Vanger family itself.
I'd say be fairly warned. Stieg Larsson writes of brutal sexual assault, while at other times he approaches the subject with an untamed one track mind. But what he does, he does quite well. What appeared to be a brutally long and excruciating read turned into a very methodical and well thought out work that went by quickly! And the reason it went to quickly is because Larsson really knows his craft, he knows his beloved Sweden, and he knows how to crank out a great story! Rather disturbing in some parts, yes, and some parts quite sad. But he always knows how to keep the reader interested. This is already an international bestseller. Despite some parts in there that didn't quite go with my standards at all times, this should instantly be a worldwide sensation! I look forward to more Stieg Larsson in the future.
