5 out of 5 stars Practical explanation of life's experiences   June 27, 2009

Humorous historical and practical explanation of the constant existence of chance in all physical behavior, and probably in the abstract world as well.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the paperback, if at all   June 23, 2009

My hardcover copy had many instances of missing words in the text. While annoying, this is a simple matter, but hopefully corrected in the paperback edition.

Mainly, as others have noted here, it really had only a few really good examples of how to better apply rules of statistics to real life. I haven't found a better book that does so without being so dry that I fall asleep.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Buy   June 16, 2009

Title is very misleading. Not only the title, but editorial comments and stars are also misleading. If I were the publisher, I would propose the title : "Very basic probability, and a bit of very basic statistics for dummy people". I admit, this kind of title will not sell anything, and that's why I'm not a publisher. These guys really know how to sell a book. A kind warning: This book is not suitable for high school graduates, and contains extremely boring and dull material.

Normally it deserves single star. I'm giving two, because I'm amazed with author's ability to prolong a simple sentence to ten paragraphs. Not at all...

Great read. Tough topic made readable by Lenard Mlodinow.

4 out of 5 stars Randomly good book   June 13, 2009

It was good book. As a math geek, I knew most of concept or theories presented in book but never applied those concepts in real life. It def. changed my views on many subjects in life.
Some parts of book were too boring. I had to struggle to keep reading a few pages. Don't get me wrong explaining a math formula in plain English is no easy task. But I would have loved to see a formula written on one line, instead of reading a paragraph explaining the formula.
I loved the first & the last chapters. This book will help you realize that most things in life are not what they seem. Success has a lot to do with luck. Yes hard work is important but so does the factors beyond our control. Basically if you want to succeed, you have to be ready for many failures.
My favorite quote from the book was by Thomas Watson, "If you want to succeed, you have to double your failure rates."
