For aspiring animators June 28, 2009 Diane Kistner (Georgia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Born in the early fifties, I grew up on Disney. Thirty years later, watching my son's Saturday morning cartoons, I could not believe how awful the animation was and how much had been lost in terms of expressiveness, humor, subtleties, and style. Partly this loss was due to depending on computers to render animation inexpensively--largely bypassing the artist--and partly the loss was due to diminishing artistic skill. Time must be devoted to learning the craft, and that takes years.
I know animation has changed a lot since the early eighties. Now we have some incredible 3D on top of 2D, and the software has come light years from the earliest days. But a computer is only as good as the knowledge and skill of the artist who guides it.
I remember when my son (as a freshman art major) was grumbling about having to take Life Drawing classes; he wasn't going to be doing that for a living, and he was more interested in drawing fantasy art than real human bodies, so he really didn't see the point. Soon he realized, however, that for an illustrator no class he could take was more important than Life Drawing.
The same could be said for aspiring animators. Learning foundational skills and techniques from the masters is critically important, even if one plans to go in an entirely different direction. I would encourage any aspiring animator to get the two-volume Drawn to Life set and really work through the books. The set, too, would make a very nice gift for art students and those interested in game design.
THE "HOLY GRAIL" OF DRAWING AT DISNEY June 23, 2009 RedSprocket 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am awe-struck and in total amazement about these incredible collections of teachings. These are absolutely the best books for aspiring animators, artists and seasoned veterans of the animation trade. You will be blown away when you actually read through the processes, techniques and experiences of the masters who experienced Walt's teaching style. I only wish I could have been there to experience first-hand these insights into drawing, thinking and inspiration. I recommend these books to ALL artists!

A 'must' for both film and art libraries June 15, 2009 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Any library strong in animation or drawing history in general or Disney in particular needs DRAWN TO LIFE. It offers the Walt Stanchfield lectures for the first time in a two-volume gathering of legendary lectures from the long-time Disney animator. For over twenty years Walt Stanchfield lead Disney and influenced rising young illustrators: his writings for animation artists and film pros alike offer valuable insights for any students new to animation and is a 'must' for both film and art libraries. Volume 1 and V. 2 each pack in legendary lectures not to be missed by any serious art library.
