4 out of 5 stars Good fun with a partner   November 17, 2009
Steven P. Wieland (Boise, ID)
This is a hidden object game (HOG), in which you search a finite number of rooms for things you need to propel the story forward. For instance, you might need to find scraps of paper to put together to reveal a hidden phone number or secret code. In addition to hidden objects, there are some compartments that must be unlocked by solving puzzles, many of which are reminiscent of those puzzles you might have played as a kid where there are numbers you can slide around, but only one open space that allows you to only move one number at a time.

There are two stages to this game, each with several rooms in which you might have to locate items.

The graphics in this game are well-executed static "sprite" images. There are lots of detailed objects on the screen. Combine the graphics with the creepy sound effects in a dark room, and you can create a spooky atmosphere. There was only one point where we thought that an object was unfairly obscured because the graphics were not rendered very well.

My spouse and I played this game all the way through in about five hours in two sessions. The fun part about a game like this is that you can take your time and work through it with a companion or by yourself. We thought it was fun to have a couple of drinks and work through the puzzles as a team. For $7, it's not a bad investment in an activity you can share with someone else. Don't buy this game thinking you're getting an epic, nuanced storyline. It is what it is, and if you take this game at face value you'll have a good time. We recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Great but short   November 8, 2009

I bought this game based on the fact I enjoyed playing the free demo and that the game had gotten good reviews (both on this site and elsewhere). I wasn't disappointed in the beauty of the game nor the scare factor. The scenes are beautifully rendered. It is a spooky, creepy game as well, and there were a few times the game made me jump in my seat. It is also a nice mix of hidden object and puzzle games. However, I did have some minor technical difficulties with the game slowing down and almost freezing at points. And my biggest complaint is that it was incredibly short! There are only three changes in location. The story is not well-developed, due in part to the game's length. If they had added more to the story line and added additional locations it would have been much better.

Overall - fun, but not worth the money unless you can find it for about half what it's listed at on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars SPOOKY GAME!!   November 3, 2009

I like this game a lot. It's really spooky! There are totally unexpected events that actually made me jump a couple of times. I've only played the trial so, I don't know how long it is but it has two features that I like most in a game-hidden objects and interaction with objects. I'm seriously thinking of buying this one!

4 out of 5 stars Good hidden object/adventure fusion   October 31, 2009

This is an engrossing hidden object/adventure mixture in which some objects found must be used by the player in order to move ahead in the game. The hidden object portions are as good as any I've seen, in that all the objects are large enough to see but hidden well enough to be challenging. There are also mini-games to be played from time to time.

Many HOG games tend to be quite short such that nearly the entire game can be played within a free trial period, but such is not the case with this one. I thought it was a good length. If you need help to figure out what to do next, the game has a very good hint system. Another problem with typical HOGs is that they are often so easy as to be completely boring, but again, that is not the case here.

The game kept this middle-aged casual gamer engrossed for long enough to be worth the money. There appears to be a slow progression in HOGs toward adding more "adventure" style puzzles, a very welcome change. A game has to be outstanding to get a 5 vote from me, so I gave it a 4. Other games in this mixed genre include Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst (which is a 5 game), the recent Department 42 (a 4 game), and the Magic Encyclopedia games (a 5 game). If you get stuck, walkthroughs are available online.
