5 out of 5 stars Fallen Earth one month in and I am now paying for it   November 11, 2009

Fallen Earth reminds me of Star Wars Galaxies. Yay, I miss Star Wars Galaxies. The dual-natured user interface, and the feeling that I can do whatever I want within the game is something that I discovered surprisingly nostalgic, and appealing.

When I first started playing Star Wars Galaxies and had recently transferred from Battlefiled 1942 [where I had got my first real taste of playing with other people], one of the things that really made me take note was the fact that there was no save and reload. It was all live, and happening now. Strangely, I was reminded of this shortly after appearing in the game proper, when I was half eaten by a mutant chicken. Just after that, I was killed by another mutant chicken, rinse & repeat. Yet rather than the usual sigh-and-respawn, throw the mouse at the wall and yell, I guiltily looked around to see if anyone had noticed me making a complete arse of myself, that hasn't happened in a long time.

It's not pretty and I have moaned about this before so I'm not going to mention it again. The game isn't as full as some, but then again it can always be added to and in the last patch a whole raft of MOBs have been added between Midway & Oilville, which had been looking a little sparse. And what it does do really well is suit its subject matter well. The impression of a post-apocalyptic world is very well realised. I even went and had a look at a ruined house, which had no NPCs, no quests and no merchants, because it looked interesting, exploration [or the need to do it] has returned.

Controls are not intuitive and it has taken me a while to even start figuring out combat. Instead of running around levelling at high speed, I have been forced to spend a while experimenting with stuff, including how the combat works, how best to use the UI, and generally how to interact with the world. Again, it reminded me of Star Wars Galaxies, which could be charming in its lack of intuition.

This is not a game for the faint of heart, it has an Eve-Online learning curve, and don't even get me started on crafting which is huge and awesome. I have got hours in front of me in connection with crafting. It has just taken me two days to make a motocycle, but it was worth it. Combat is another issue and will take some getting used, practice makes perfect I can hear you say.

Where some games are easy to pick up and play, Fallen Earth is something that demands time to learn how to play. In WoW as you know, it was possible to hit the ground running. In Fallen Earth I've had to relearn how to tie my shoe-laces :)

It may not seem like much but 95% crafted items is true to the post apocalyptic setting and really changes how one plays and gets involved in the entire game.

4 out of 5 stars Worth your time, if you are up to something a bit more complex   November 4, 2009

Uhh. Yes! Came into this game with an open mind, and somewhat low expectations based on the various comments around the net.

But, it is way better than I expected. Graphics are fine. Sound is fine. Gameplay is fine. Bugs are fine (for a new release). Performance is varied, but once an area is finished loading, it is fine.

Best of all, there is a lot of freshness to Fallen Earth. It has taken a lot of the best complex parts of other games (in the same way that WoW took a lot of the best simple parts of other games), refined them, and put them into play.

FPS style combat. Crafting. Skill based character advancement. Faction associations. World scope and size. And much, much more.

I have been playing MMORPGs since 2001 and EQ1. Within the first 5 minutes of stepping out into my selected starting town, I was LOST!!!

Now, that's an experience I have been looking for again for many years.

Buyer Beware this game is a joke, I've played mmo's for years , UO,Everquest,Daoc,Wow,Anarcy online,Star wars and many others. Fallen Earth is graphically a disgrace, the toons remind me of the toons in a Tony Hawk game cube game my daughter has. This game is 95% crafting and it's laborous and yields very little. If it's the gunplay that attracts you bare in mind you'll be crafting every bullet and gun. Combat consist of hitting your tab button and banging away at your mouse buttons (boring) and every mouse click costs you a bullet you spent time farming components to make plus real time crafting clocks. I blew 50 bucks on this lousy game, and am doing this review so some of you won't waste your money. A previous reviewer likened this game to going to work and I whole-heartedly agree. It's work and it's a drag, I didn't even get into mounts and what a poorly thought out idea they are. A game this poor is difficult to review because there are too many shortcommings to list. Buyer Beware!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone   October 20, 2009

This game is simply great, although it's not for everyone. Within the first 3 hours of playing I was reminded of older mmorpg's such as EQ1 and SWG. This game will not blow you away with graphics, but it will blow you away with it's depth of gameplay options. Don't feel like grinding? Earn XP by salvaging garbage, or farming onions. It's an extremely smooth game for only being out less than a month. I've yet to have one crash or graphic error and GM's get back to you extremely quick. This is not an "easy" game in that you get a giant glowing sword at lvl 2 and can take on 10 npcs at a time. You have to have a strategy or you're killed rather quickly. Remember those annoying people in games that bunny hop in PVP? Not in this game! They've made it so when you jump there is a split second delay of movement! The community is great and always willing to help. This is the first game where I haven't had to turn on region/global chat. The faction system is flat out awesome. This is not like other games where you get your faction up with someone and it doesnt effect something else. If you go one faction another will make you KOS. I'm just so impressed with this game so far I'm rambling....vehicles....factions....combat rules.....it's like Firefly minus space ships! Seriously check this game out and give it at least 4 hours of gameplay before you make your decision on what kind of game it is. MINT!
