Xbox 360 sets a new pace for digital entertainment. More than just a cutting-edge game system, Xbox 360 also integrates high-definition video, DVD movie playback, digital music, photos, and online connectivity into one sleek, small tower, and in the process puts true Next-Gen power right at your fingertips.
Xbox 360 with wireless controller
Xbox 360, shown with wireless controller, is a sleek, customizable gaming and entertainment system

Under the Hood
Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor--it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It's powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. It also carries a custom ATI graphics processor loaded with 10 MB of embedded DRAM, 48-way parallel floating-point dynamically scheduled shader pipelines and Unified shader architecture. This is powerful enough to draw 500 million triangles per second. In other words, it makes for great looking games in standard TV definition, and even better thanks to built-in support for HDTV 1080i televisions. It also supports the widescreen 16:9 format.

The unit has a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, which plays both the game media and progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box. For game-save and media storage, users can choose between the detachable and upgradeable 60GB hard drive, or a separately sold 64MB flash Memory Unit. Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library.

Control your Gameplay
Xbox 360 uses a refined button layout for its controllers. Back and Start buttons sit at the center of the controller and between them is a new Xbox Guide button, which instantly takes the user to the Xbox 360 user interface. From there, they can check for friends online, access personal digital content like photos and songs, and more. The black and white buttons of the first Xbox controllers have been replaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left and right triggers. Xbox 360 can accommodate up to four wireless controllers and has three USB 2.0 slots to use for wired controllers or for streaming your digital media from digital cameras, MP3 players, and any Windows XP-based PC. Microsoft has also created a video-conferencing camera, sold separately, that will work with the system.

Xbox 360 user interface
Xbox 360 can manage your games, your online friends, and your personal digital library

The Media Experience
All Xbox 360 titles can be played in either standard or high-definition resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smoother graphics. Game designers will be able to take advantage of the system's multi-channel surround sound. The Xbox 360's digital media allows users to supplement any game's music from tracks in their own personal library.

Go Live
A built-in Ethernet port allows users to connect their system to a broadband connection for access to Xbox Live. The Xbox Live Silver Membership included with the console lets anyone create a Gamertag and gamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voice chat, and connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace to buy expansions, maps, and other digital items for your games. You can also update to a Xbox Live Gold Membership at anytime for even more benefits. The separately sold wireless adapter supports the common 802.11a, -b, and -g standards.

What's in the Box?

  • Xbox 360 console
  • 60GB detachable hard drive
  • Wireless controller
  • Xbox Live headset
  • Standard AV cable
  • Ethernet cable
  • Detachable faceplate
  • Xbox Live Silver membership

4 out of 5 stars Quality control is a mixed bag, but happy in the end   November 20, 2009
Tiger (San Jose, CA)
The XBox 360 console's quality control as of the late 2008 is a mixed bag. Due to the defect rate especially in older years of the console, you might find yourself scouring the shelves for the latest date and revision number. I bought in 2008, so I can only comment up until then and would hope that it has only improved in 2009 revisions.

Don't let the console revisions scare you too much, but you probably should get the latest possible unless you have a reason to get an older one. Not all revision updates apply to hardware. It can simply mean an updated copy of the operating system which is updated automatically when you connect to the internet. The biggest thing to look for is at least get one with lower power consumption, which in 2008 I think it was the 175 Watt power supply in most 2008 versions. I found quality control issues on minor things and ended up purchasing and returhning several consoles until I found one that worked great. I personally didn't like the August/September 2008 revisions and ended up looking for slightly older revisions because of a high-pitched noise problem on the newer version of hardware at that time. I actually much preferred the June 2008 revision and choose an older box after buying and returning several. There could very easily be more updated versions by now, but I can only speak of the 2008 versions that I spent a considerable amount of time pouring through when I bought mine.

My biggest problem was a high pitched noise that came from the power supply brick. I had to go through several purchases and returns until I finally got one that didn't make a high pitched noise. Some were far better or worse than others. My bottom line is that when not using the xbox, I don't want a constant high pitched noise in the background when doing other things like watching movies on my DVD player. Some people cannot hear electronics noise since the higher range goes as you get older. If you are one of those that can hear if a TV is on without looking when muted, then you'll hear this since it is far louder than the TV noise. After several purchases, I finally found a power brick that didn't make a noise. If you are stuck with one that makes a noise when off, you can put it on a power strip and turn the power off, but that isn't very convenient.

I was also surprised by how much the console vibrates when a disc is in the DVD tray and spinning. I could feel the floor shake several feet away. But if you install your games to the hard drive, then the disc doesn't need to spin. It really isn't a problem. Some vibrate a bit more than others. I believe the DVD drive is designed to run at a higher rate of speed to load from disc faster, but vibrates more as a result.

The XBox console makes a bit of noise while running, especially when a game is in the DVD tray and not installed on the hard drive. The DVD drive while spinning is very loud, louder than the original xbox. I highly recommend using the option to install the game to the hard drive and it loads faster and is much more quiet when running. When installed, I don't even notice the noise, but it certainly isn't quiet. Note that some console's DVD drives are noisier than others. But if you just install all games, it make virtually not difference. It also saves wear on the DVD drive which is one of the componentns likely to fail first.

Beyond considering hardware version, regarding the console alone, I really like my console. Once I got one without the minor issues that seem like poor quality control on small things, I really like it. If I forget about the search to pick one, I would have said 5 star. If I rated on the imperfect ones I returned I would say 2 stars. But after 1.5 years of playing games without any problems at all, I rate it 4 stars because overall my experience is very positive. I am very happy with my xbox and the experience ever since I set my last one up. There are lots of games at reasonable prices that I like. It has never failed me once. I am not at all worried about my hardware failing and it has never given any hint of any pending problem. If you didn't know there were issues in the past, you'd probably be thrilled with the current revisions of the xbox. I had heard the biggest problem of the past I believe was the console overheating due to motherboard configuration with the video and CPU chips too close together with insufficient ventalation and when it got too hot the video processor would fall off.

Speaking of heat, to prevent overheading, make sure you don't obstruct any of the ventalation holes and that the console is in a sufficiently ventalated space (not a completely enclosed cabinet. My cabinet has a ventalation grate on the bottom and back. Think of it like a computer in terms of the fans and heat it has to expel. My sound system gets a lot hotter than my XBox though.

But if you are a hard core Playstation fan, then I wouldn't force an xbox on someone who doesn't want one. I'm sure Playstation is great and am not comparing the two. All I can say is I am very happy with my xbox.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of fun, when it works   November 17, 2009
Gary D. Pollock
Atari, NES, Playstation, all the older consoles were built to last. You bought one console and that was it for the generation. Xbox 360 changed that. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the first console to break. It's the first console to have extremely high failure rates. Usually, the failure rate is under 10 percent, and the failures are generally covered under warranty. However, the xbox 360, according to a game informer survey, has over 50% failure! To make matters worse, a lot of the failures simply aren't covered during the times they normally occur. The famous red ring of death is covered under warranty, but the general video failure due poor soldering on the GPU, disc drive failure, or many others are not. Even when the repair is covered, it's at least two weeks before you're able to play again. I use Microsoft products all the time, and love windows 7. However, Microsoft should just say no to hardware.

When it is working, the system is a lot of fun. It's a standard video game console with hardware that is now getting dated. One of the major flaws of a console - you can't upgrade the parts and are running on years-old technology. The applications on the live interface aren't anything you can't do on a normal pc, but has a lot more easy-to-find games and charges a fee. This isn't a review about a better system, so I'm not going to recommend one of those. However, had I gone back in time, I would have taken the money I spent buying 360s and put it into a nice computer system. I would have gotten a whole lot more for my money.

In summary, this is a lot of fun. If you decide the 360 is for you, buy one, and then start saving up for a replacement. I rate this console 2 stars: 5 for the amount of fun I had, and a deduction of one star for every console I had to buy out-of-pocket over a two-year time period.

3 out of 5 stars It's good but here's what you should know about it...   November 13, 2009
Cesar Arrieta Solis (Costa Rica)
I think that the Xbox 360 Pro 60GB Console I just bought is wonderful, I've bought 5 since I started playing on Xbox 360 (2 in Amazon), one just coming on its way home. However, I bought this last two with the idea that Amazon would send me a recent model but they just sent me one (brand new) from August last year (2008), the one coming, I don't know about it. I was expecting one of the new ones with jasper processor but that one is just a Falcon like the other 3 I already have here at home. I'm not really complaining but I feel like they sent me one model they had in a storage room somewhere back there. So, it would be nice if the other one (arcade) I just bought is a new model. I'm buying more and I hope they send me the newest models. Thanks a lot!!!

4 out of 5 stars The best gaming system out.   November 11, 2009
J. Smith (Indiana, USA)
Hands down the best, and most games on any system. Xbox Live is unmatched, movies, TV show, and overall ease of use is a big plus. Something for everyone, from the hardcore shooters and RPGs to racing and puzzle games, its all here. Netflix also works very well(if you have solid highspeed internet). Streaming music and pics from my PC is a nice feature too. I also have a PS3, but I mainly use it for blu-ray. When it comes down to gaming, this is what I use.

1 out of 5 stars Get yourself a PS3 Instead.   November 4, 2009

I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means but I have owned several different gaming systems over the years and they have all done what they're supposed to do without breaking down for no reason - except for the X Box 360. Two years into the purchase it simply decided to stop playing disks of any kind. It refuses to read movies and all games. It's only remaining functionality was to use it for NetFlix and to play the few downloadable games I had purchased through X-Box Live. I don't know if these breakdowns were built in to the system purposely or if they simply rushed the manufacturing in order to beat Sony to the stores, but I find it inexcusable. If any automobile were performing this way, there would be a total recall of the product. PS3 will soon be offering NetFlix. They have a wonderful Blu-Ray player. They don't break down like the X-Box. Be smart and avoid this product.
