Great game. Got a great price! September 30, 2009 Mudd (San Jose, CA) I am currently playing my 2nd go-around on this game on hard difficulty as a mage. My first time, I played for about 4 weeks on medium difficulty as a paladin. This is a very fun game for those who "likes to take it easy" when it comes to gaming. I'm more into strolling around and fighting at my leisure than getting my heart pumping or getting myself frigthened when a monster crashed through the wall. This is a very forgiving game, you can make quite a bit of mistakes (even on hard) and still make it through.
The premise of the game is you played a character (warrior, paladin, or mage) who has an army of creatures (up to 5 creatures) and go around adventuring and fighting (very much like HOMM). The fight takes place in a chess-board style turn-based match. There's quite a bit strategy to use because you can have spells, different configuration in your army, and creature's unique abilities to use to your advantage.
The game runs fine on my last-gen machine (Duo Core E8400 w/ 2GB RAM, ATI 4830). Zero crash in over 2 months of playing! Which is a +1 star right there. I was able to play without internet connection, so that's definitely another plus. There are some small minus though, at least to me ...
1) The special Rage ability is a bit underpowered/unbalanced in my opinion. They don't really do that much direct damage (especially Zerlock and Saleem) and don't scale to later part of the game.
2) I find that there are some creatures unbalanced. I think level 5 creatures is a bit weak for their cost. And some creatures (Royal Snakes, Evil Beholders, Black Unicorns) are a bit too powerful.
At the end of the day, I got the game for 14-bucks with free shipping from Amazon. With the amount of fun I had and the rock-solid stability of this game, I'm giving this a 5-star!
SecuRom does not let me play September 23, 2009 C. Fisher (South Dakota) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this game because I am a fan of the original King's Bounty. It brought me fond memories and I had a little bit of time to play on my laptop during my military training. I brought this back to my room and installed it. It was great, probably in need of a little modding, but well worth playing in vanilla form.
All was well until I installed some updates from Vista and lo and behold the game will no longer work. It gives me an error each time saying that SecuROM does not recognize the original disc. Now I am pissed. No where did this game warn me that it was installing SecuROM, and I would have never purchased it if I had known it was using SecuROM. Now, I am left away from home, unable to do much with my computer to combat this malware.
Heroes of King and Bounty! September 1, 2009 N. C. Hill (Springfield, MO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When i first started playing this game i felt like i had been burned by a HOMM rip-off. I was upset that i couldn't upgrade any castles or i couldn't tell which creature's turn it was during the battle scenes. But once i started getting in to the game, it started to grow on me, i just had to accept it for what it was. I mean i still think it is a HOMM rip-off to some extent, many of the units look the same and even have the same abilities, for instance, the vampires have the "no enemy retaliation" ability which is exactly like Heroes. I thought not being able to upgrade my castle sucked at first but then i realized it gave me more time to focus on my hero and just do some good old fashion text-based questing. They don't skimp on the text in this game either, be prepared to read some fairly lengthy stories and requests from all the locals.
The graphics are very pleasing to the eye, very bright and vibrant! There is a nice variation of terrain too, ranging from marshy swamps to lush forests to snowy peaks. You choose to play as a Warrior, Paladin or Mage each with their strengths and weaknesses. Its a turn-based game where you are tasked with building armies and casting spells to defeat the enemy on a grid based battlefield. If you have played Heroes of Might and Magic 5 then you will be very familiar with this games layout. The only aspect of King's Bounty that is original to the game is the addition of the Spirits of Rage Box that you find early in the game. It contains four powerful spirits which level up with use. They are like the secret weapon of King's Bounty and can deal out some serious damage in time.
There are so many quests and different areas to explore, its hard to say how long it would take to complete everything. I think what makes this game fun and addicting is it constantly rewards you with gold and items with every step and every battle, so you always feel like you are advancing quickly. I like to think of this game as a homage to the HOMM series and not a rip-off. Regardless, it is a solid game and for the price its hard to go wrong with all the hours of entertainment it provides.
Nothing new to the RPG world, but fun nonetheless August 6, 2009 ninjasuperstar (Iowa) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
King's Bounty: The Legend is a throwback to older generations of role playing games: Turn-based, stupid quests, unoriginal (and uninteresting) storyline, level building, and so on. Despite the tired formulae at work in this game, King's Bounty: The Legend performs these old tricks quite well. The turn-based nature of combat changes over the course of the game. While the quests are dumb and the story is boring, you don't have to read much to get an idea of your next task. And the level building is kept to a minimum. Because the game play is familiar, there's something quaint and nostalgic about the game. It seems to revere older role playing series by doing most things by the book.
The graphics are full of bright and pleasant palettes and somewhat dated texturing. The music is appropriate, neither noticeable nor intrusive. The whole package comes together as a decent gaming experience taken a few minutes here and there. The game is too repetitive for continuous play, but it's fun to visit and revisit on occasion.
Great re-birth of the game for Kings Bounty fans! August 2, 2009 M. Suitt (Silsbee, TX) I am probably part of the minority in that I never played much HoMM, but was a HUGE fan of the Sega Genesis port of Kings Bounty. From that standpoint, what I love the most about the game is that they gave it enough of a modern face lift to make it a contender with today's technology, while keeping the original flare and charm of the original title.
The quests are well thought out, and at times quite amusing. The number of unit possibilities is somewhat impressive, although I felt they could have went even farther with the endless possibilities. The interface is quite easy to learn, only clumsy in some of the rotated 3-D angles when attempting movement. The battle mechanics are perfect, and the animations quite well done. The character advancement system works much differently and has been updated to a more familiar skill tree system.
The game's faults remain mostly the same as the original title. The most glaring of course is replay value. While there is some replay value in playing with a different one of the three classes or perhaps testing different army structures, the sub quests remain the same, as does the layout of the world. Only placement of resources varies from game to game, which can also be a large factor in harder levels.
As personal taste, I would have like to have seen the bounty system with the many villains that were included in the original title. But those seem to have gone by the wayside in lieu of a quest based system. But overall they did an excellent job balancing "grinding" for advancement with quest content.
I recommend this game for anyone who was a fan of the original, or for anyone who wants to enjoy a different spin on your typical RPG. The game says teen, but I found that it was appropriate for any age with only pirates mentioning rum as the "drug reference".
