Product Description Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Award for his work on global warming and the possible ills the world could suffer. Award winning Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition also includes another action-packed EA game - Northern Strike. Battlefield 2142 - In 2006 a climatic catastrophe triggered a new ice age on earth. A hundred years later, everyone gave up on finding a solution to the problem and two superpowers were formed: Europe and on the other side the Pan Asian Coalition - causing an arms race. Now it's 2142 and the war for the few resources left has already been going on for a few years, with no end in sight. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech weaponry, including assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also take control of the most lethal vehicles known to man. Massive battle Walkers wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When taking on this futuristic armor players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new hi-tech countermeasures like EMP grenades and smart mines to level the playing field. Epic online gameplay for up to 64 players drops gamers on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their team-mates. In Northern Strike, it's a few years into the most desperate struggle in the history of mankind, and with the conflict focused around the Mediterranean, the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) seizes the chance to claim the undefended natural resources beneath the ice of mainland Europe. By the time the EU is aware of their presence, the enemy is firmly entrenched in the continent's harsh ice fields, among abandoned city ruins and soaring mountain peaks. Only fierce close-quarters infantry battles along claustrophobic city streets and narrow rocky passes will eject the PAC forces from their well-defended positions and push them back towards the sea. Terrible as a Single Player FPS October 11, 2009 John Nash (Billerica MA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was clearly *not* intended to be a Single Player FPS. My bad for thinking it would be. At best, Single Player is good for 'practice', to increase familiarity with weapons and vehicles prior to joining an on-line game. The gameplay is *painful* in Single Player. You are outmatched, outgunned, outmaneuvered, etc. by the bots. There is no ability to 'run' - only to perform a brief 'sprint'. Otherwise ... well, picture your grandmother running in knee-deep mud, with cinder blocks strapped to her ankles. That's about the speed at which you are able to move. Just slow enough to keep from dodging the enemy bots, making gameplay very frustrating, in every map. Speaking of maps ... very limited there as well. This is not like the previous Battlefield games at all - perhaps that was the intention. Also, you are not allowed to accumulate medals, increase your rank, etc. in Single Player mode. Has great potential I'm sure, if you are in to on-line team play, but if you wanted a good Single Player FPS ... keep looking.
A couple of glitches but otherwise... October 9, 2009 Mando75 A very fun game, a couple glitches in activation of Northern Strike, but I contacted EA and they solved it within 24 hrs. BEWARE PUNKBUSTER, make sure before you try to play online that it is installed and working, or you will have serious problems. Overall, I love it.
Unlike any other September 9, 2009 Mike H. This game has a whole range of useful devices that are fantastic! No there aren't laser guns, but there is a free star wars modification that can be downloaded that satisfies this and stays quite true to the StarWars universe.
This game is basically many different futuristic games rolled into one. With EMPs, cloaking devices, vehicle tracking mines, and so much more stuff than I can list this game really makes brings a whole new feel to the Battlefield series that will surely be missed when playing other games.
Unlike other games infantry have a chance of taking down vehicles because all classes have at least 1 thing that can hinder, disable, or destroy vehicles. But vehicles aren't completely vulnerable and with battlewalkers that can take on anything and keep going, any battle is intense and exciting.
This game is focused on special effects more than most others so expect fantastic explosions, excellent smoke cover, and lots of bright lights and smoke trails. However it's not too graphic intensive (minimum requirements being 128MB graphics card), so you can still enjoy the special effects.
I love everything about this game and I feel the lack of mods for it should speak for itself on how well rounded and balanced this game is, as well as how much people prefer to play it.
There are some downsides that many people find annoying. The dynamics are VERY different from any other Battlefield game so expect to change your strategy on just about everything now matter how much a vet you think you may be. Also, unlike the other Battlefield games you don't get a decent kit when you first start out; weapon-wise you only have a knife, pistol/(SMG if engineer), primary weapon, and a tool for assisting your team mates. However unlocks are quick to receive, but still expect to invest some time in the game before you unlock higher up weapons.
I didn't read anyone else's reviews August 31, 2009 L. Keller (Houghton, MI USA) The game is a lot more fun than I ever thought I'd have with a first-person shooter. I don't normally go for this kind of game but decided to buy it based on the recommendations of friends and co-workers. As difficult as it was for me starting out I do okay now. I like the variety of roles available (Sniper, Assault, Support, and Engineer), each of which plays a vital role for the different types of game play (Conquest, Conquest Assault, Assault Lines, and Titan). The upgrades you receive for reaching various achievements allows for more flexibility and improved ability. Some games I simply want to hang back until someone walks into my cross-hairs (using the Sniper kit) while in others I want to push rapidly ahead with my Assault kit.
I've played for a few months now, and the only thing I find frustrating is running into someone that is "un-killable." Apparently, there are some people out there that use programs to enhance their playing ability. Don't get me wrong - there are plenty of people that can wipe the floor with me, but when I can barely see someone with my long-range scope on my Sniper rifle and they turn to face me dead-on and get a one-shot kill on me before I can steady my first shot... or when I am consistently killed by the same person - and only that person - in one or two shots EVERY TIME I run into them - even though they are using a heavy machine gun at long range (the bullet spread should make a large pattern all around me) - you know something's wrong.
Outside of that, the game is a whole lot of fun. Just don't play if you plan on sleeping any time soon - the adrenaline rush might keep you awake for a while.
I would have given the game 5 stars, but there are just enough cheaters that make playing absolutely no fun at all.
a rough transition June 3, 2009 N. Austin (Rockford, MI USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
a fun update on the previous BF2 -- nice amendment to how you can unlock items, rank up, etc. Also, nice updated equipment and even roles. The downside, IMO, is that what used to work in BF2 (prone is best, fire in short bursts) seems to be useless in 2142.
Then again, maybe it's just the painful part of starting over again; it's possible that with improved upgrades it'll feel like "home" again.
