5 out of 5 stars *ss Puckering Experience   November 11, 2009
Aron Russell Stewart
I think this game is worth buying. I'm surprised it's not more popular. I rarely hear my fellow gamer friends converse about it. I thought the game was scary from the opening cut-scene of the space-ship with an eerie as hell female voice singing "twinkle twinkle little star." I never would have figured that that song would make me uneasy in my chair like that. I thought the story line was great. I do have only a few complaints: there's never enough money when you really need to buy something for upgrades, the weapons seem weak on the aliens (and can be frustrating to use), i would rather this was a 1st person game than a 3rd person game. I can understand why the developers went that direction. The main character's suit is cool to look at, adds to the atmosphere of the game, and jumping in zero-g environments is cooler in 3rd person. The only other complaint I have is that it seems like the main character walks incredibly slow, as if I'm trying to control Frankenstein. It sucks moving so slow when you're being swarmed by aliens. Other than that, I think it's one of the best games of ALL TIME. I would compare it to playing Doom 3.
If I could only give one constructive criticism to ALL game developers.......give the players their own choice to play either 1st or 3rd person. Even so, this game gets 5 stars for being so scary, and I never get scared from horror movies or games.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Atmosphere, White-Knuckle Action, but a dissappointing plot   November 8, 2009

If there was one thing about Dead Space that stands out most overall, it has to be the way the chilling atmosphere blends so well with the intense, white-knuckle action.

Everything about the atmosphere, the spine-tingling background noises, flickering lighting, terrible creatures, it all adds up to a very tense, memorable experience. I can't say whether it was the mechanical sounds of the ship, or the horrible, wet, organic noises you'll hear in the background are more unnerving. Whether it's some creaking, whining machinery, or some awful creature slithering up behind you, the game will pull you in, giving you the chills the whole way.

You're riding a dark elevator making a flicking sound as each floor is passed, then on the com in a creepy robotic voice "10 kiloton life-form detected in food-storage". That basically sums it up.

To complement this gruesome world this game has created, you'll be getting some very intense action, with a unique fighting system that has a whole new feel to it. I remember a review I was reading where the reviewer noted he enjoyed "unlearning the headshot" and I couldn't agree more. The whole system of attacking the limbs/tentacles/?? is very unique, and will be quite a refreshing experience to those used to typical shooters.

The weapons are upgradeable (YES!) and are quite varied, and again, unique compared to other guns you might've used before, the secondary-fire on each gun also adds a whole new level of depth to the combat. From the rotating Plasma Cutter, to the Line Gun with it's extremely useful mines, to your hardy Ripper (a very useful buzzsaw weapon), you have a whole slew of different guns at your disposal for all kind of situations. Some guns are better on certain enemies than others though, so you'll begin to develop a good strategy of what to use, and how to deal with each situation. The only good guns really worth upgrading all the way are the Plasma Cutter, Ripper, Line Gun, & Beam Cannon. The Plasma Rifle doesn't do enough damage, and the flamethrower was a fun idea, but the key is cutting off the extremities, which the flamethrower isn't made for. But the four guns that are good and worth upgrading are all you'll need.

The story could've been alot better, and I find it quite overrated. I came in thinking the plot would be good, but instead found zero likeable characters, a couple of boring video, audio, & text logs, and no real satisfaction or release at the end. I wanted to play through again, but the ending didn't really satisfy me. The story started off as interesting and showed alot of promise but came short. They could have done way more with it in this regard. Maybe Dead Space 2 will have more emphasis on an engrossing plot.

I care alot about a good story in a game, especially a game that begs a better plot with better characters such as this one. If the plot was more satisfying, and was developed better, this game would be five stars. But it has to lose a star due to this glaring hole. The plot could've been great if they tried a little harder, they had alot of great stuff to work with.

5 out of 5 stars Sci-fi/ Horror fans this is your game.   November 3, 2009

This game is just awesome. If you have a ps3/360, heck even Wii now that Extraction is out, and haven't played it yet, you are certainly missing out! I rented it a while back and loved it. Played thru two times completely, then partially after that, to get most of the achievements :P... Now I am ordering it because I am longing for more! I can't wait for Dead Space 2!! And if you like this game, the same company (Visceral Games) will be releasing Dante's Inferno (based on the books Divine Comedy) soon so check it out! That game has 7 circles of hell! (Gluttony, Lust, etc)

This game is scary as hell! In the dead seclusion of space you find yourself trapped in a derelect spacecraft, fighting to exist.

5 out of 5 stars In DEAD SPACE no one can hear you scream, or say HELL YEAH!   October 23, 2009

Like Zombies? Of course you do. Like Sci-fi? Natch, then this is the game for you. Finding yet another way to make zombies relevant, DEAD SPACE is a chip off the old block.
Unlike standard zombies that need to be dispatched by destroying or removing the head, DS prefers the EVIL DEAD mythos of dismemberment. Yes boys and girls a perfect excuse for even more blood letting. So many ways to take care of those pesky undead too! Many badass weapons at your disposal not to mention telekinesis! I enjoyed this title immensely and unless lots of gore and flying body parts are too much for you then i'm thinking you'll love this as much as I. Four stars!
