Don't Buy this Great Game! August 28, 2009 Steven Coy (San Diego, CA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great Game! But I highly advise you not to buy this version. The security crap (read the other reviews) has utterly disabled me from installing it properly. My only disc drive cannot read the disc... And now if I want to pay, my only option is to buy it again?! Of course there are other methods...
If you want to play this game (especially to prep yourself for the coming sequel!), I suggest you do one of the following:
1. Get it from Steam [...]
2. Get it from "somewhere else" (assuming you know how and what I mean)
Just don't buy this version!
Buggy Game, but Also One of the Best! August 12, 2009 J. Martin (The United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is probably the best game I've played in years. I have to say I think this game has Half-Life beaten by quite a bit. The game is essentially an RPG-shooter type of game, or perhaps action-RPG (but also has guns and other modern weapons as opposed to swords and such). Bioshock comes packed with an intriguing and mysterious story of a quality I don't think I've ever experienced in a video game.
Bioshock is totally compatible with the Xbox 360 controller for Windows PC. The game works flawlessly with this controller. Anyone who wants to play the game with the Xbox 360 controller for PC will appreciate how easy it is to activate the 360 controller controls in the games menu. You can easily switch between using the Xbox 360 controls in the game menu, or using the keyboard and mouse controls if you prefer that.
Gameplay and fun aside, the game is good for other reasons. For one, this is a very thought-provoking game. Walking away from playing it will leave you thinking. In my case, it left me with a certain sensation and overall mood that I don't typically get otherwise without reading a particularly thought-provoking book.
This game has only two downsides that I'm aware of. The first one, as the title implies, is that the game has lots of bugs. I experienced crashes with considerable frequency compared to other games I play. Of course, other people I know say that they never had any such problems with crashing. So different people seem to have different experiences with regard to the crashing, but I had a few crash issues.
The only other downside that I can think of at the moment is the fact that the retail edition of this game contains SecuROM. If SecuROM bothers you (as I personally believe it should), it might be a good idea to buy the Steam version of this game instead since that version does not contain SecuROM. I own the Steam edition, and I love it.
I would strongly recommend this game to people who are looking for good games they can use their Xbox 360 controller for Windows PC to play, people who like RPGs, people who like games with an intriguing and thought-provoking story, and also to people who like first-person shooter games. This is a high quality game that has certainly earned my recommendation, and I am personally looking forward to seeing Bioshock 2.
This Game Changed My Perspective On Reality. August 4, 2009 C. Bernal (^33 degrees 55' under) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is tied with the Half-Life series as my favorite game of all time. If you love a good story prepare to be overwhelmed, if you love shooting, prepare for war. Follow the light little moth and buy a copy, you will be doing yourself a favor, believe me.
BioShock
Wonderful, but Not Without Downsides (Surprise! I Don't Mean DRM!) July 30, 2009 C. Rancour (Houston, TX United States) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
Everyone who reviews this is whining to high Heaven about SecuROM because of course no one on Amazon has any idea what a review is. Everyone thinks that this is a messageboard where we're all dying to hear their deepest, darkest thoughts on everything under the sun, instead of hearing whether a game is good or not.
I will talk about my experience with SecuROM without all the spooky, 1984 language you'll find in every other paranoid review.
I have installed and uninstalled this game seven (count 'em seven!) times since I got it and with minimum hassle. You might now be asking yourself, "But how is that possible? The other reviews I read said that if you try to install this game more than once Black Hawk helicopters appear in the sky over your house and use flamethrowers on your cat and loved ones." Maybe this has happened to someone else's cat, but what happened to me was I bought a new computer and Bioshock was the first game I installed as it was a new release at that time. The computer was totally FUBARed, so we had to re-format it several times. Two times I re-installed the game and the computer was still messed up. I ended up having to replace some parts that were defective and then re-installed the game again. Low and behold the game refused because of this SecuROM thing. I was advised to call customer service. Guess what, geniuses! I did and I spent five minutes on the phone and had no problem getting the game re-installed.
Do you guys know why SecuROM exists? It exists because companies have to make money to stay in business and do you guys have any idea how many people out there refuse to buy anything? If you have ever known anyone who works in the IT field you know probably at least five people who pirate EVERYTHING. I know people who steal things just to be stealing something; they pirate games they don't even intend to play, just because they're free.
Companies are forced to try to protect themselves somehow. Can you really blame them for wanting to get paid for the games they make? So maybe instead of crying your heads off about what a bunch of big bullies EA and 2K are, you guys should be angry at the pirates who actually did this to you. And the funny part is I would bet my entire paycheck that half of you people are pirates who just can't seem to draw a parallel between your theft and what it's forced companies to do to people who actually are honest.
Am I saying that I'm in favor of SecuROM? No, of course not. I hate it like everyone else, but I am saying that I understand why it exists and that a lot of people are misplacing the blame.
My only problem with the game is that it doesn't install very easily with Vista. There are a lot of sound bugs and they require someone with some computer know-how to fix (or I guess you could call tech support). I feel like the developers were rushed when they created the characters in the game as the splicers are all more or less the same as each other and after a while it gets sort of repetitive. You fight basically the same five people over and over again. Everything else about the game is great.
2K is also a great company. They answer questions in a timely manner and they give away free stuff on their messageboard. What else could you ask for? I got a free Bioshock 2 record (music, like for a record player) just for sending them my address. They didn't even ask for a SASE or anything. You can't beat that. Not many companies give away free stuff for no reason. And they hold tons of trivia contests and so on on the board where you can win prizes and the woman who runs the contests is so nice that she usually ends up giving everyone a prize just for participating, even though you didn't win.
Caused my DVD drive to stop working July 26, 2009 Kevin Zimmerman (Ephrata, PA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I ignored all the securom stuff because I really wanted to play this game. I installed it. Played the game, great game. BUT right after I installed it, my dvd drive won't read other discs! It recognizes only the bioshock dvd but not anything else. I wish I had heeded other reviewers advise and stayed away. Anyone have any advise on how to fix this?????
UPDATE: My drive started working again after messing around a bit, not sure what caused it, but only had the problem with Bioshock.
