Product Description
Namco's Museum 50th Anniversary Museum compiles some of the classic Namco arcade games that defined gaming in the 1980s. Go back in time and play classics like Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, and Pole Position. The new retro menu Interface allows players to explore a virtual arcade hall where each of the game's classics will be standing in its original arcade form. The only difference is, this time you don't need a pocket full of quarters! Pole Position - The milestone in racing games Pole Position II - Sequel to the original, 4 real racetracks - Fuji, Test, Suzuka, and Seaside Rolling Thunder - Become secret agent Albatross and rescue Lelia Blitz from the evil Geldra Bosconian - Survive against an army of space stations, while avoiding asteroids and other obstacles Rally X - Players drive around a maze while avoiding chasing cars, laying smoke screens, and collecting flags Dragon Spirit - Control a powerful dragon through the air, harness spells, drop bombs and breath fire at enemies Sky Kid - Control a bi-plane and avoid enemy planes using evasive loops, while dropping bombs & shooting down other planes Xevious - Use a heavily armed fighter plane to destroy enemies and targets, in the air and on the ground Mappy - Control Mappy the police mouse, as he dodges chasing cats to collect valuable items

1 out of 5 stars Great games, horrible DRM-marred CD-ROM   November 18, 2009
Mark B. (Pittsburgh, PA)
I love oldskool gaming! That's just how I am since I've grown up with an Atari 2600, a NES and truly dug some classic games on my PC and in the arcades. I particularly have a soft spot for two classic games: Ms. Pac Man and Galaga. Even Rally-X gets props from me since the old arcade back in Kennywood Park back in the '80s was literally oldskool gaming nirvana.

So when I saw this package I couldn't help but to snatch it up and give it a spin. Once I got past the annoying "Come On Eileen" track (I guess one-hit wonders Dexys Midnight Runners were cheap, as opposed to other '80s bands) played during the arcade game selection the emulation is good enough.

It's the crap that I had to put up with regarding the StarForce DRM for the copy protection. Picture your system randomly rebooting for no real reason for simple things such as a Yahoo! IM chat session or even just listening to some FLAC files. Or maybe while writing in a word processor. Or while editing video or remastering digital audio. And I'm not talking about the Blue Screen Of Death. The crap that is StarForce doesn't even give you the dubious benefit of that!

I've mentioned in my review of Taito Legends the following:

"It was with titles, such as this, I feel that the software industry has shot itself not just merely in the feet. It practically blew its entire lower torso off with a bazooka! The reason is simple: If legit retail games, such as this collection, can wreak such unforeseen havoc, I can see why people would rather download a clean copy from elsewhere. That's the ultimate irony! Has the industry realized that another reason why people acquire titles like this from other sources is due to this?"

Again, I don't advocate downloading software that one doesn't already own in some form or another. I think the games are quite good. But is it worth an unstable system afterwards? At least I was able to obtain the StarForce removal tool that was able to get rid of the malware known as StarForce. I even have the no-CD patch now so that I can run this software safely.

So I'm at a moral crossroads: To advocate software purchases yet have to show outright disdain for how the software industry treats the legitimate buyers. Do I need to take photos of and print out glossy pictures of my software and DVD collection just to prove that I'm one of the good guys? Whatever happened to the idea of "innocent until proven guilty"?

I know I'm getting off track in regards to the review of the actual games here. Let's just face it: The buyer who buys retro collections such as these knows about the games. Since these are manufacturer-authorized emulations one can expect that the products passed quality assurance. It's when software conglomerates breach the whole idea of ethical conduct, such as the Hippocratic Oath, when they think that installing malware without the users' knowledge is justified by the overblown "Red Scare" of software piracy.

Thus, four stars because I love the games and one star because of the malware. And shame on the industry for treating we, the consumers, as criminals.

1 out of 5 stars Starforce kills it   October 4, 2009

Starforce not only kills this otherwise great collection of games but can literaly kill your windows install if you try to install this on 64 bit windows so you've been warned:

I recommend installing in a virtual machine so it doesn't mess up your windows if you really want to play these classics from the past.
As far as the games go, if you are able to get them installed without killing your windows, they all seem to be faithfully recreated with the original sounds and artwork so that is the only positive thing about this product(only reason it even warrants a single star and not negative or zero if possible).
Interface to play the games is cumbersome and annoying also.

2 out of 5 stars ugh   July 13, 2007

It messed up my computer, slowed everything down, and if you don't have a joystick...forget it.

the games are great, but you need the cd in to play and it verifies slowly...every time you switch games. It's irksome.

1 out of 5 stars Starforce is bad   October 19, 2006

It's too bad this game uses Starforce copy protection. I don't want to copy the game or do anything illeagal, but I can't use any CD burning software with this installed. Also if you remove it, starforce does not come off your PC. If you google "starforce removal tool" you can download an exe to remove starforce from your PC. You also have to take a few other steps, you will find instructions there. There is currently a boycott on games using starforce, and for good reason. I do not recommend buying this game.
