5 out of 5 stars Great for active boys!!!   September 16, 2008
I got this product for my second grade son who has been having difficulty memorizing addition and subtraction facts, and it has been perfect for him. He loves the challenge of it, and it is especially good for little boys who are active, because it is much more fun that sitting down with flashcards or even a handheld math review game. He has made great strides in his ability and also his enthusiasm about math. His little brother also enjoys it, because he can use the number identification mode to reinforce what he has learned in preschool. My husband grinned at me the other day as the boys were fighting over whose turn it was to use the Math Mat, and said, "Great purchase, Honey!" That says it all...

4 out of 5 stars Good product for math fun   February 13, 2008
This is a fun way to practice math, my 3 boys all take turns using it. I have two problems with it. The 'reset' button is too conveniently placed in the middle so the kids step on it during their game. Also, the numbers should face the child playing it, not the observer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Activity to Learn Counting and Addition & Subtraction Facts   January 27, 2007

My little guys (K5) really likes this game. It lets them MOVE! As most parents of little boys know, little boys need that and it's good for them. As a teacher and parent, I am always on the look out for new ideas and games to play with kids that allow them to move and have fun. My little guy also has a Leapster which he adores. Between the Leapster, this mat, and games with mom, he has most of his addition and subtraction facts down AND he understands what he is doing.
I recommend having your child stand on the outside of the mat under the number 5. Then the kids can run over and pick their number. Also, there is a Repeat Question button if you didn't catch the question. The only thing I'd like to see them change is better audio quality. Mine is several years old though so maybe they have improved that.

Bought this for 4 & 6 year old. 1st grader uses it in place of flash cards for homework. 4 yr. old uses it to get rid of extra energy while learning numbers, hopefully it will hold up until he needs to learn his addition & subtraction. Upside down numbers other reviewers metioned aren't a big deal, my kids stand off the mat and jump onto the numbers.

4 out of 5 stars Made by a great company   December 16, 2006

My daughter got the Math Matt Challenge game for Christmas 2005. It worked fine out of the box but my daughter, who was 4 at the time, wasn't quite ready for math so we put it away for awhile. After several months, when my daughter was ready to try it again, we brought it back out of the closet but it was no longer working. We tried new batteries but to no avail. I was very disappointed that it was broken when it had barely been used, so I emailed the manufacturer, Learning Resources, to tell them about the problem. I received a reply just a few hours later saying they would send me a replacement within 10 days. Just like that! By the end of the week we had a new Math Matt Challenge, it works perfectly and my duaghter is having a blast playing with it! I was very impressed with Learning Resources' quick resolution to the problem. This is a company that stands behind their products and are commited to customer service. Based on the other reviews I've read here, I think the defective game that I had was a fluke and that they generally produce well-made products that last. I'm giving this toy only 4 stars because of the design flaws that other reviewers mentioned - mainly, the numbers should face inward toward the child, and it is too easy to hit the restart button accidentally. Overall I'm very pleased and would gladly purchase other toys made by Learning Resources.
