5 out of 5 stars How to cut your calories in half with simple exchanges   November 19, 2009

I bought this book to simply skim over it a little and see the calorie differences in restaurant and fast food meals. But I could not put this book down and ended up reading every page. It is a very comprehensive guide to making smart decisions while eating out or in the supermarket and how to save thousands of calories, but it is much more than that. It is a nutritional guide showing the best foods to eat, whole foods like eggs, oranges, kiwi fruit, honey, avocados, dark chocolate, salmon, and other nutrient dense filling foods. The books main concept is how to choose the less of two evils. Like foods are deceptive, A Burger King Whopper at 770 calories has 230 more calories than a 540 calorie McDonald's Big Mac, if you have to have a burger and you choose the Big Mac instead of the Whopper you were going to have you just saved 230 calories. After ten meals you have saved 2,300 calories and this is just one change.(The Hardee's/Carl Jr. six dollar burger has 890 calories.) Remember that each pound of stored fat has 3500 calories, if you can cut 500 calories a day out of your current diet you will lose a pound a week. this book shows you how to make better decisions in the restaurant, fast food joint, supermarket, and in the kitchen.
This book really opened my eyes about restaurants. Along with being very expensive they also serve ridiculous size portions and add a days worth of salt to many dishes. The worst offender is Outback with its 2,580 calorie baby back ribs. How about On the Border Dos XX Fish Tacos at 2,550 calories, or Uno's Pizza Skin appetizer weighing it at 2,400 calories. Most milk shakes contain over a thousand calories but Cold stone's PB&C Shake contains a whopping 2,030 calories. However you can make smart decisions eating out and this book grades all the national chain restaurants and fast food restaurants and gives you the options that are smart choices when you measure calories, fat content, and sodium. The authors also made this book a fun and easy read. This book is information you must have to make smart eating decisions for yourself and your family and to win the war on obesity and weight gain. If you eat out a lot you can literally cut your calorie consumption in half by eating what this book recommends at the same restaurant or going to another where the same item has half the calories. You can also save a ton at the supermarket with simple changes. Very painless weight loss plan. I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference   November 19, 2009

This is a well-researched, eye-opening report with plenty of information about bad and good foods that are served at well known restaurants.

The book consists of eight chapters, each chapter being focused on a separate issue such as: 1. Foods recommended for every day, and foods to always avoid; 2. The best and worst restaurant meals; 3. Strategies for eating right when dining out; 4. Advice for holiday eating; 5. Strategies for grocery shopping; 6. The ultimate guide to healthy beverages; 7. What to eat in various situations (stress, tiredness, etc.); 8. Eating guide for children

Each chapter provides tons of helpful information presented in a simple, but effective layout. It is an easy and fast reading, with some very nice and helpful pictures. The author made a good job in creating alternative, healthy menus for almost everyone and in any situation.

I especially like the comparison of good and bad meals. For a restaurant of your choice you can find presentation of good and bad meals with detailed information of why they are either good or bad (calories, fat and sodium content, etc).

Of course, it is not possible to list all restaurants in one book so the author concentrates on the chain restaurants that are predominantly known as fast food places. This is a limitation. The other thing that I noticed is that the primary focus is on a fat/sodium contents of the meals discussed. We all know that carbohydrates are not to be ignored when analyzing foods and their effect on our health. This, in my opinion, is a major shortcoming of the book, and for that reason I am subtracting 1 star from the rating.

Otherwise this is a nicely published and useful reference book and I recommend it for all health-conscious people especially those that watch their weight. "Live 150 -- Your Body Maintenance Handbook" is another very useful title that I highly recommend. Especially useful is the chapter titled: Obesity - Your Worst Enemy. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Things you should know   November 17, 2009

Bought the first one last year and it was very helpful and now I bought the new 2010 one and it is also very helpful, tells you what you should look for when eating out. What foods are good for you and what foods have the most calories, fats, sugars, sodium etc.It lists many of the popular and fast food restaurants in the country.

I definately recommend it,great Holiday gift,if you don't know what to give, you can't go wrong with Eat this not That.

5 out of 5 stars couldn't be better!   November 12, 2009

This is one of those rare books that you don't just read it and put it onto the shelf but keeping it by your side at all times. It is a beautifully designed, fully colored illustrated book with loads of useful information along with insightful comparisons of different food alternatives. Buying this book is the best personal investment for oneself that is sure to pay handsome dividends for years to come. I have the earlier edition but I think this most recent edition has enough new material and "explosive" insights of our current supermarket offerings to worth a new purchase.

I totally agree with the authors that the cause of obesity is not that we have too much food, but because of us not having enough "real" food. We have been fed through decades of artificial, chemically processed food addictive, cleansed by a slew of man-made ingredients that even FDA can't keep track of. We have forgotten what real natural food tastes like. After reading this book, I am now wary of those purely marketing terms that can be outright deceiving like "all-natural", "multi-grain', '0 trans-fat" etc. They are mainly perceived as "healthy" food but in reality they are far from it! With our obesity rate rising as fast as our national deficit, we really have to educate ourselves on the food that we take to gain control on our overall health-being. The authors have shown us that we could have equally satisfying meals with much less calories if we are educated on which food alternatives to go for. I applaud the initiatives that NY, CA are taking to mandate food chain restaurants to publish calories alongside their menu. It is a necessary step towards the right direction.

The secret formula to weight loss is really that simple. Fat Gain/Loss = Calories In - Calories Out. However it is by no means easy to figure out how to eat right. There is a multi-billion dollar food industry trying to sway us to the other direction. But this book will make a difference to all of us by helping us make important life-altering healthy choices. I know it will because it already make a difference to mine.
