Product Description In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney's wordless adaptation of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he'd planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher's trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.

Kids love this one November 21, 2009 C. Telfair (San Jose, CA United States) I've seen so many beautiful picture books that connect more with their adult, art-loving buyers than with the children for whom they are intended. This one is the real deal -- kids love it too.
I had this book sent to my grandchildren, who live at a distance. When their Mother called to thank me, I could hear "ROARRRRRR" in the background. My 16-month old grandchild was getting into the "text" (This is essentially a book without words, but the plot is evident to even the youngest child.) My 3-year-old grandson got on the phone and told me the whole story! And the Lion and the Mouse are not all -- he said, "Grandma, there are all kinds of animals" in the pictures.
Grandma hit a home run this time. Not only is this one of the most beautifully-illustrated books I have ever seen, it's one children will love to "read" over and over. It's a winner. And -- another hint -- invest in the hardback. When the paperback is available, it won't include the amazing end papers.
What a Delight! (Pinkney's Lion and the Mouse told with pictures) November 12, 2009 Pam Tee 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just read... no, make that viewed Jerry Pinkney's new book with my kids, and it is most wonderful. Wordless -- or nearly so, there are a few words like 'putt' and 'squeak'-- it retells the classic story of the "Lion and the Mouse" using fabulously detailed artwork done in watercolors and colored pencil.
The book itself is large and title-less. On the front is the beautiful golden lion, while on the back is the adorable (and heroic) little mouse. The author follows the traditional story very closely, only adding one additional detail for both of these creatures of the savanna. He gives them families. The mouse is a mama of a passel of little squeaks, and the lion is a daddy.
Talking Points:::
This is a gorgeous book. The light yellow tinted pages perfectly compliment the large, detailed drawings which are done in browns and golden hues. Exquisitely drawn, the images lie on the spectrum somewhere between realism and impressionism. The lion's eyes are so expressive. We all laughed at the face he made when holding the little mouse.
Without words, the book allows adults and children to choose their own vocabulary. The ultimate read aloud.
One thing you might consider is that artwork is so detailed that babies and even some toddlers might not like it. Which is to say that it's the opposite of the bright, simple art that you see in books dedicated to these youngsters. The pages essentially being 'too busy' for little eyes.
Jerry Pinkney's "Lion and the Mouse" would make a wonderful gift for preschoolers on up to Tweeners. (#1039)

So simple yet so much to talk about. November 6, 2009 Cubiccube (Fair Oaks, CA USA) I love picture books. I bought this one for my 2 year old son for his birthday. I'm Thai and I love it that I could tell him this story in Thai in my version. I do that to many other books but the drawings in this book is just so astonishing and full of lifes.
No Good on Kindle October 21, 2009 Jonathan S. Shapiro 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a photo-only book, which was NOT obvious from the sample content. While the original is a fine book, the Kindle does not render the images readably. Since the book doesn't have *any* text, that's pretty much a show-stopper for this edition. I ended up returning it, which was a shame.
Beautiful Book October 18, 2009 G. Tofani (Sunnyvale, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There aren't many books without words!! However, everyone knows the story of the lion and the mouse, so having a book of beautifully illustrated pictures depicting the story was perfect! Loved it, and the child to whom I gave it loved it also.
