Amazon.com Review
Disaster takes Mia and her family by surprise when her home catches on fire. By the time the mouse clan can make its escape to safety, the whole house is doomed. Now Mia has only one chance to restore order: Sam Squirrel, who once designed a time machine. If Mia can build the device on his blueprints, she might just be able to go back in time to prevent the fire.

Mia's Math Adventure is a role-playing game merged with a healthy dose of mathematics practice for kids ages 6 to 10. As Mia roams the area surrounding her scorched home, she encounters a plethora of characters who are out to help or hinder her. Players must solve logic puzzles just to help her get from one place to the next. Then, perhaps as things are starting to seem simple, a basic math drill will pop up and gameplay can only go forward after players supply the right answers to the computational questions posed.

This is one of those educational games that strives to offer children everything: top-notch entertainment, solid educational content, good characters, and unique, engaging animations. And where many games fail in this quest, Mia's Math Adventure delivers--for the most part. Some kids may find guiding Mia through the backyard and other game environments a bit of a chore, as the real-time navigation feature is clunky. The process of learning to get around can frequently trigger unneeded advice from the ever-helpful mouse. This is the sole complaint that can be made, however, about a game that is both a genuine learning experience and plenty of fun. --Alyx Dellamonica

Amazon.com Product Description
Oh, no! Mia's house has just burned down! How could this have happened? Did Romaine the rat have something to do with it? If only Mia could go back in time and prevent the fire. Maybe the scientific genius Sam Squirrel can help. With his plans of a time machine, it might be possible to save Mia's home. Mia will need help to prevent the tragedy. Guide her on a quest to find all the parts needed to assemble this crazy contraption, and gather "sparklies" for fuel.

The Mia adventure series integrates fun learning activities into a story-game of exploration. In each adventure, kids lead Mia throughout her house and garden to find articles needed to complete a mission. Along the way, they encounter challenging activities to test their abilities. Successful completion of each task results in a reward, bringing the companions one step closer to their goal. Kids learn about addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometric shapes, and problem solving as they play.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the positive reviews   September 29, 2009

I agree totally with the negative reviews posted. Where IS the math?? Having to install the DVD each time you play the game is at least inconvenient, if not aggravating. And most of the time the student has to follow around that stupid mouse, clicking on everything in site, trying to find the next LITTLE bit of math games. My daughter likes answering the questions and doing the math, but the clickin' adventure is a frustrating nuisance.

2 out of 5 stars Where's The Math?   December 28, 2008

I am homeschooling a second grader and bought this as a Christmas present. I hoped my daughter would have some fun with math problems as a counterpoint to our usual arithmetic worksheets. Because the word 'Math' was prominent in the title, I expected plenty of drill along with the fun and was sorely disappointed when it took 10 or 15 minutes of play to reach 1 minute's worth of extremely simple math problems. We completed level one of the game in about two hours with maybe 5 minutes of math altogether.

Granted, we started at level one, which was below my daughter's math ability. I hope the next level will have more and better math problems, but I fear but we may never find out as she just told me she doesn't want to play this expensive game again.

We both agree that the graphics are well done, but my admittedly hyper-sensitive daughter didn't like the fire sequence and she found the 'bad guy' rats a bit scary. Worse, she was often frustrated when the mouse would not respond to directions, even when we did what Mia herself told us to do. Sometimes we had to click on an object multiple times before it worked the way it was supposed to. Other times, we'd move the cursor in the suggested direction (after clicking on Mia's face to get hints) and it would take several attempts to get her to move.

All in all, neither my daughter nor I cannot recommend this game.

Unfortunately, we were sucked in by other "good" reviews but when we got it, it was a disaster. First, it took forever, to install. Second, it will not install on the hard disk and requires loading the CD-ROM each time which means the adults must do it. Third, the user spends very little time doing math problems because the user must go through first a lengthy story which cannot be skipped each time a new game is loaded, and then must spend an inordinate amount of time taking a journey between phases of the math game trying to locate secret clues as to how to open the game. There are no solutions available and the user can get stuck . Next, the program can be adjusted for different levels of ability but when we set it at seven years, it went to third and fourth grade math. Maybe, in Japan but not here. Moreover, the program sometimes locks up. There are much better programs available which do not have these hang-ups and are a better buy.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Not Boring!   September 22, 2003

My four-year-old daughter is almost through level one now without my help. She complains that it is gboringh but then keeps playing it for more than an hour after her complaint. I think her frustrations come from being unable to easily and quickly navigate around Miafs world. Sometimes when I come to help her because she is stuck, I see that she has clicked on everything too quickly while trying to find what she needs to do next, so the game cannot properly respond. So far the math in level one has been no trouble at all. The difficult part was the days of the week, which she is now learning thanks to this fun, educational program. I look forward to seeing level two soon! The Math Rabbit program we had before this was truly boring for her. This is a welcome addition to our CD-ROM case.
