 Another disappointing Star Wars toy December 27, 2007

Yet another disappointing Star Wars toy. Don't get me wrong here my 5 1/2 year old son loves it.....loves Star Wars, Darth Vader, the light saber, the lights, the sounds, wow. However, actually using it correctly is another story. It's very lame technology. It reminds me of an Atari game for those of you out there that can remember that or some of the first computer games. It's very outdated! The interactive lightsaber is very touchy, hardly worth using and the pixels are HUGE! It's hard to read the screen because of it. Then there's the sound, it's hard to understand the voice. "B" sounds like "D"....and "G", etc. Also, it's not something that a 5 year old can pick up and figure out how to play. Some of the games, I'M not even sure what's going on or what I'm supposed to do and I'm 29 years old with a Master's degree! All in all, it's not worth ANY money for an educational game, only for something with buttons to push for lights and sounds. I don't see him being interested it it for very long.
For a real educational toy, I would recommend a Leapster. You can get neat games with lots of popular characters. He loves it AND he can learn from it.
 Another Good Educational Toy and Collectible from Oregon Scientific October 7, 2007

I had purchased the Oregon Scientific R2D2 Learning Laptopfor my kids and they have played with it constantly. However, the games for R2-D2 were for younger kids and I wanted something more challenging for my 8-year old. Although the Sith Dark Lord would not be my FIRST thought as a mentor for my children, Oregon Scientific has designed a very nice learning toy that my children will challenge my children while keeping them entertained.
Like comparable toy laptops on the market, the device contains lots of different games (50). Unlike other laptops, the child interacts with the screen (larger than R2D2's) with a small light-saber and a QWERTY keyboard. The lightsaber changes colors depending on whether you want to be a Sith Lord or Jedi. Games are aimed at hand-eye coordination, music, memory, reading, typing, and math. Don't expect high-quality graphics. Like R2-D2 and other toy laptops, the LCD screens are very rudimentary. But, it doesn't seem to matter to my kids. Of course, if you are interested in Star Wars Collectibles, you will be quite happy adding this to your collection!
Oregon Scientific claims this is aimed at ages 4 and up. I'd slide that up a year or two depending on your child's maturity and mitachlorian levels. Too early to tell how the device will hold up to tough kid play, but it seems solid and well-built.
