5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!   November 22, 2008
My son received this as a gift last Christmas. At first I didn't know how I felt about having an ant farm in our house. But, I have been pleasantly surprised. It has been so much fun to watch these little guys work! We have had numerous visitors to our home who are amazed at them as well. Not something a child can "play" with. Just something to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Stop Killing Your Ants   June 22, 2008
I was surprised to read all of the comments from people who's ants died quickly. I bought a new fangled gel ant farm last year, and decided to also set up my old Uncle Miltie version. I got 2 sets of ants from [...], and discovered that the gel version was a huge bust. All the ants did was try to escape, and they didn't last long. On the other hand, my Uncle Miltie sand colony thrived, and a few of the ants lived for more than 7 months. All I did was put in an eye dropper full of suger-water every few days, and occasionally added a bit of the food that I got from the [...] people. They also sell sand, and I just rejuvenated my farm for another go-round. So far, I've purchased 75 ants from this company, and they all arrived alive within a couple weeks. They also guarantee replacement if they don't. Anyway, my family thinks I'm nuts, but I'm really enjoying the ant farm.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Educational   May 27, 2008

For anyone complaining about this ant farm and the psychological effects on children when the ants die, I say grow up! Most children as young as age of 5 or 6 has probably stepped on a bug on purpose and can handle more than we adults think they can. Can you remember when you were 5? I can and the death of bugs at 5 didn't make me into an angry adult who cannot except hardships or turn me into some raving lunatic! Go figure. Let kids be kids for crying out loud! Try talking to them when the ants eventually depart from the planet and explain what happens in nature. Most likely they'll say "Oh, o.k." and then go watch Hannah Montana and forget all about it. If the ants were able to live say 3 years, most children wouldn't take care of the ants anyway. Once the novelty wears off they wouldn't take care of them and the ants would probably starve to death. So go ahead and purchase this for your kids and use with supervision if very young. It's a great learning experience and you will see some similarities between insects and humans!

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy!   July 25, 2007

I bought this for my 8 year old brother, and my whole family likes it! It took a little on the longer side to receive the ants in the mail, and the waiting is difficult for young children, but they are active, building tunnels and burying the dead. One drawback-there weren't many ants, so they have to order more on their own. Overall, he is enjoying it, it got there in good time, and I am happy with the product for the price.

5 out of 5 stars The Sand Version is Better Than the Gel   June 30, 2007

My six year old son got the gel version of this for his birthday. When our ants to arrived (after waiting a couple of months) I reopened the original box to pull out the farm only to find the gel inside the farm molding. Yuck! All the ants died quickly too.

I called the Uncle Milton customer service number. They were great! The farm was a gift so I didn't have a receipt and didn't know where it was bought. They said there were previous problems with mold and recommended their sand version instead. They sent to us their Giant Ant farm and two weeks later our new ants came (all for free). I didn't even have to send moldy one back to them.

We've had the farm up and going for just five days. It's fascinating! Better than any fish tank. My kids and I love coming home from our day and seeing what the ants have accomplished.

With the gel we wouldn't have needed to feed or water the ants but it's kind of fun thinking about what you're going to give them next. A piece of hamburger meat, apple, bread...?

The one problem I did find is with the feeding caps on top that you must remove to insert the ants and feed and water them. Before I even put the ants in I found that when I removed the caps they often fell into the farm. To keep this from happening, or to help retrieve the cap if it did fall in, I strung some thread through an air hole. Just a tip if you find this a problem too.
