Product Description The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is an activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children's book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. The elf watches the children's behavior and reports it back to Santa each night. By morning the elf returns to its assigned home and hides in a different location, allowing the children to play a delightful hide-and-seek game. Each product comes with its very own elf doll enabling others to begin this fun-filled Christmas tradition themselves. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition includes an exquisite 10" x 10" hardbound children's book--illustrated by award winning artist Coe Steinwart, a vintage-like pixie elf doll that sits approximately 8" tall, and a certificate commemorating the adoption of the elf by a family, teacher, or other group. Additionally, this unique gift includes a festive keepsake box for convenient storage. The purchase of The Elf on the Shelf allows you to give more than a gift. Instead, you are giving a priceless treasure...the creation of lasting memories.

Very cute and clever, but my daughter was TERRIFIED of the elf! December 1, 2008 I have a five-year-old daughter and thought this would be a great tradition to start in our home. Last night we read the book for the first time, and the elf magically "appeared" this morning. Bad idea. Apparently I should have let her see the elf in the box first because when she came down stairs and saw him sitting on top of the TV, she let out an ear-piercing scream and literally jumped a foot off the ground and wrapped herself around me. I didn't want to pick the elf up and show it to her because according to the book, if you touch him, it will take away his magical powers. And in the event that she calmed down, I didn't want her to think the elf wasn't magical anymore. So, while she was cowering in her bedroom, the elf was "shooed away with a stick". Needless to say, I was late to work this morning, and I'm waiting to get a call from preschool asking me why my daughter is talking about an elf in our living room that is alive that got spanked with a stick.
It's a very cute and clever idea, I just wish I would have introduced the elf prior to him making his grand entrance. The elf is going to write her a letter today and hopefully smooth things over. Wish me luck!
The best idea ever! December 1, 2008 I just got The Elf on The Shelf this year and have been using it for 4 days now. My son decided to name him "Helper" and he has been a very welcome addition to our family. I love the story behind the Elf, and the magic powers he has, and I think this will be a very fun family tradition to start with my boys. If my son isn't listening to me, all I have to do is call out "Helper" and he stops what he is doing (and shouldn't be doing) immediately. My son is so excited in the morning to see where his elf has landed from his trip to the North Pole, and we make it a fun family adventure each morning trying to find him. I love this idea!!
Love it! November 30, 2008 My twins girls who are 4 years old love this! We just got it a few days ago. The Elf is magic. Great bribery to get kids to stay in bed, etc....

Great new tradition November 25, 2008 We trust that this little guy will be a member of our grandchildren's home for years to come. Great idea and great fun for the family!
